Firefighters aided by Philadelphia engines battled the flames as wind spread the fire along New York to Illinois avenues. Reports say six people may have perished, with several feared trapped in roaring ruins.

Death of Rev. W. W. Lampkin in Athens
Rev. Wallace W. Lampkin died at his Athens home last Friday after a brief pneumonia illness. Born August 1849, he was nearly 54. A longtime Methodist, he served in the North Georgia Conference for 17 years and helped build parsonages and churches. He later sold religious literature and then worked in Athens merchandising. He leaves a wife and four children.
