A long Richmond era obituary summary recounts the death of William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt's rise to the presidency. It covers the funeral arrangements in Canton, the national mourning, and the cabinet's response, with details on the oath taken and the public display of mourning across Ohio and beyond.
Washington report traces eight original McKinley cabinet members noting only three remain at start of his first term Secretary of the Treasury Gage Secretary of the Navy Long and Secretary of Agriculture Wilson. Changes dominated the state and justice departments with three heads each.
Theodore Roosevelt is sworn in as president after arriving in Buffalo at 1 40 PM and proceeding to Ansley Wilcox home. He had traveled from North Creek and Albany at high speed after learning President McKinley had died, taking the oath of office.
Washington reports President McKinley lying in state in the Capitol rotunda as crowds file past the bier before the funeral train departs for Canton. The scene includes Major General Brooke's procession, military bands, and a civilian parade led by Chief Marshal General Boynton with clergy, doctors, veterans groups, and pallbearers in attendance.
President Roosevelt outlines in Buffalo the continuation of McKinley era policy with emphasis on liberal reciprocity, abolition of commercial war, selective tariff cuts, direct trade with Americas, a strong American merchant marine, Isthmus canal, a government cable to Hawaii and the Philippines, arbitration in foreign disputes, and protection of savings and investments by trusted, high‑integrity stewards.
Leon F Czalgosz also known as Fred Nieman faces murder in the first degree in the McKinley assassination. Grand jury returned the indictment unanimously as witnesses including doctors and guards testified at the Temple of Music scene. Czalgosz refused to answer whether he had counsel prompting judges to appoint lawyers.
A prisoner identified as Czolgosz was moved under heavy guard from the Erie county penitentiary to the city hall building for a trial in a secure courtroom. Detectives, police and aides formed a tight escort as the prisoner, described as of medium height with a ten days growth, was kept under constant watch and masked as to his sanity. Memorial services were planned in Havana for President McKinley at the Tacon theater. A customer praised Grain-O as a coffee substitute in LeRoy New York, while an Indiana couple named Henrietta Henry and Etta were discussed as an amusing naming outcome for eleven sets of twins.
