Wellston board balks at naming anti tax committee
Wellston School Board president Allen Griffith proposed a committee of Ralph Crabtree Paul Frick and Einan Plummer to oppose a 2.5 mill operating tax cut on the November ballot. Crabtree refused to serve citing the salary increase for Supt. Ralph McCormick earlier. The board later considered broader action, but Crabtree remained unsure about joining. The measure would reduce annual operating income by about fifty thousand dollars and threaten state funding. Other actions included hiring Mark Mullen as pinch hitting basketball coach and adding Garrett Powers Betty Schrinner Mary Hathurst and Dennis Wilson as substitute teachers. Attorney Harry Willard discussed options for the vacant Harvey Wells School. The board will each nominate a citizen to help decide its fate. In Pomeroy, the post office rebuild may finish by October and return to Second Street after rock fall damage.
