Washington AP report says the Agriculture Department projected a 27 percent drop in the 1948 corn crop to 2.4039 billion bushels as of Sept 1, the smallest since 1936 drought. The sharp decline could push more live stock to market amid rising feed costs and threaten meat availability.
The 1947 U S tobacco crop estimate reaches 2 151 billion pounds, near 1946 record output of 2 312 billion. Ohio barley output also falls short of last year, while meat prices may rise as corn supplies shrink and cattle numbers drop. In Elizabethtown Kentucky Captain Bert Feltner said grandfather Joseph Edward Saltkill Jr and foster mother Grace Sallee face murder charges after five year old Dorothy Juanita Hornback drowned on Labor Day at the Nolin River Hodgenville. Saltkill’s statement implicates Sallee who denies the charge. He noted two life insurance policies worth 400 and 500 dollars naming Sallee as beneficiary.
The University of Cincinnati announces a four year bachelor of science in education program in health education. It is described as the first of its kind in Ohio and one of the few in the nation. Prof. Helen N. Smith states the plan, approved by the Ohio Department of Education, will be funded by a W K Kellogg foundation grant.
