The AFL executive council warned a new round of wage increases could come if living costs keep rising. Inflation fears cited, with food prices surging and eggs and butter priced high. They urged export policy revision, boosted production, and expanded transportation to meet higher output.
In Hamburg Germany British officials announced fifty of the 4311 Jewish Exodus 1947 refugees were under arrest after a bomb aboard one transport. Other refugees were dispersed to camps near Luebeck and in Hamburg jail while British teams screened for Zionists and resistance leaders. About 100 inmates at Poppendorf camp reportedly began a hunger strike.
Firefighters resumed search for victims of the Island Queen explosion on the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh. Twenty one are dead or missing with 13 of 17 injured still hospitalized as authorities plan body recovery and investigations by river patrol, county officials, and the coast guard. Names identified include Mary Jones and David Q. Heath.
Cleveland host city watches as the six day Veterans of Foreign Wars convention closes after drawing 20,000 delegates and 40,000 guests. Ray H. Brannaman of Denver, a World War I veteran, elected commander in chief succeeding Louis E. Starr. Hudson Hyatt of Cleveland named judge advocate general.

In New Braunfels Texas the Ross murder trial exhausted a 72 member venire while selecting five jurors. A half day delay followed as a new panel was assembled to choose the remaining seven jurors. Dr Lloyd I Ross faces four York family murders on May 25 near town. Defense cites insanity.
President Truman marked his final hours as a polliwog aboard the battleship Missouri as it steamed toward the equator for the traditional crossing the line ceremony. He hopes to become a shell back, a veteran of the equatorial crossing, during initiation planned for tomorrow aboard the ship.
Federal officers in Rosenburg Oregon captured Charles M. Lawrence a 19 year old from Birmingham Alabama and James W Kelley 21 from Rupert West Virginia on charges of escaping from the Chillicothe Ohio Federal reformatory They admitted stealing a car near Columbus Ohio and committing five robberies on the way to Oregon.

About 15 Athens residents lost evening plans as Island Queen exploded on the Monongahela River near Water Street. Edward L. Schott of Coney Island Inc. put dead and missing at 21, while Chief Davis estimated losses at 1 million dollars. The ship could hold 4,000 but 90 crew, half aboard, were aboard. many rescued or died as flames engulfed the vessel.
In Point Pleasant the Island Queen excursion boat exploded, ending river trips on the Ohio for now. The excursion was touted as one of the best in years, with the loss marking a major setback for local river steamers.
