Manning bill aims to move school year end date forward
The proposal would end the academic year earlier to boost school heat relief and extend summer weeks for workers youth program participants and summer camps. Proponents say it could aid tourism for August vacations while supporting agriculture with late fairs, but critics worry reduced time for state testing and semester completion before winter break. If not passed by the Senate in time it would be reintroduced next year. Logan staff journalist Amie Wilson contributed to this report.

OU mutual aid row spurs debate on city funding
City officials weigh covering Athens police mutual aid costs versus seeking state reimbursement. McGee calls for rejecting 10 000 to 15 000 while noting OU benefits from Halloween lodging revenue. Mayor Patterson favors absorbing hours, arguing APD hours are cheaper than paying for mutual aid. Legislation to modify the mutual aid pact is introduced with three readings and an emergency clause possible.
