Loyalist militiamen man last defense lines about Madrid ten miles from the southern suburbs as Nationalist forces move closer. Civilians flee to embassies. Americans prepare shelter with warnings to stay indoors after dark. Madrid remains besieged with limited food, anti aircraft guns active against rebel bombers.
Republican vice presidential candidate Frank Knox completed Ohio campaigning and moved into Indiana to attack Roosevelt era labor measures and the Social Security Act. In Dayton he denounced the act as unworkable and unfair, calling it blundering and a threat of class hate in New Deal policies. He urged growth through production and lower prices, condemning government meddling.
Two Pittsburgh residents, Joe Willis and William Chrestler, were injured when their truck swerved on Route 7 and overturned into bottom land south of Gallipolis. They were rescued from the cab by Dr. F. W. Shane and Sheriff E. E. Hatfield, then taken to Holzer Hospital. injuries not disclosed.

Sylvester Schaeffter, 43, formerly of Cincinnati, held by Dayton police after eight shots were fired at Dr. Edward Clark of Colonel Brown Memorial Hospital. Schaeffter, a war veteran, said he sought revenge for an alleged 1929 inoculation, claiming he was satisfied with his act as officers pursued him.

Richmond Kentucky police said Park Dennie 42 West Alexandria Ohio gave an unsatisfactory confession to killing his wife Ethel whose decapitated body was found on a local farm on September 14. Dennie was arrested Monday night after his arrival from Ohio.

Detectives chase ex convict James Williams in Indiana after he allegedly murdered Elsie Lichtenwalter 41 on the Wilton Center farm. Williams warned the husband George 49 of kidnapping plans, bound and gagged the farmer, and shot Elsie seven times with a rifle, a wall shot likely intended for a second leg.
