The grand jury returned thirty four indictments after a session starting Monday with 275 witnesses. Saloons dominate charges including keeping open on Sundays. several defendants pleaded guilty with fines, while others await trial in November and December. Obscure civil actions and a few divorces are also summarized.
Herbert W. Ford and Luella Ford had their divorce suit dismissed after a two day trial in which the court found no conclusive proof of adultery. Alimony was denied and each party ordered to pay their costs as witnesses described neighborhood tensions and Ford’s suspicions.
Charles Hatfield was arrested Tuesday on drunkenness and jailed until Friday when Mayor Logan fined him eight dollars and ninety cents, with costs, for a drunken debauch. With no money, he was ordered to work off the fine on the streets as snakes hissed nearby.
Two well dressed men claiming to be oil men representing Standard Oil took a team from Johnson and Howard livery in Sandusky and fled after a multi town trip. They left after promising to return for several days, later skipping trains and vanishing. livery losses are about ten dollars plus feed. Wand and Sims of Sandusky impersonated oil men, with no employment by Standard Oil.
The Columbus report states the official total vote is 811 467 and the secretary of state tally reaches 811 467. The venue notes November 18 as the date of the released figures.
The Ladies Aid society of the Methodist church hosted a Thursday turkey dinner in the Brown building on North Court. The event attracted a large crowd and raised about seventy five dollars for the organization.
General Grosvenor announces firm support for Joseph G. Cannon of Illinois for the next speaker of the US House. Ohio delegation largely favors Burton but Grosvenor opposes a complimentary vote for any rival. Cannon, from Danville, Illinois, is a long-serving lawyer and congressman born in 1836.
Thieves broke into Mary Howard's saloon on Dean Avenue through a transom late Tuesday night or early Wednesday. About eighteen dollars worth of wet goods were stolen. Public police are investigating.
Two hundred Chauncey miners have been idle since Monday morning with no settlement in sight. Two motormen were discharged without notice last Friday and Saturday, forcing replacements. Miners refused to work when they returned to the mine on Monday.
Superintendent Eddy refuses to reassign two former motormen to their original positions. Clarence Russell, named as one, reportedly offered a new role in the fleet but cannot resume his prior job. No settlement date is known.
One more case of mallpox has developed in the family of George F. Simmons living just west of Rich land avenue near the hospital park. All other members are improving and it is not believed that any other family will be afflicted.
The executive committee of the Farmers' Institute met in Athens to prepare a program for the Amesville session on Friday and Saturday, December 19 and 20. State speaker John Shawver of Logan County will discuss barn construction with plank frames. The Coolville institute follows on December 1 and 2.
Mrs. Ben Gillett and family hosted a surprise celebration at their Strouds Run home for Mr. Gillett on his 45th birthday. Guests arrived at noon, enjoyed an elegant dinner, played games and music, and the afternoon concluded with ice cream and cake as wishes for many more birthdays were extended.
Mrs Aureling McAfee died at her Youba home on November 12 about 3 am after several days illness. Dr A M Frame of Coolville diagnosed heart trouble and asthma and said death could occur at any time. The family, who had lived in Youba only a few weeks, left behind two young daughters and a husband.
The total county vote for the Republican and Democratic congressional candidates in the Eleventh District is listed by county. The data show the sum of votes by party across the district for the election.
A revival started at Sharpsburg M E Church with nightly services at 7 o clock last week. This week daytime sessions at 1 PM invite older attendees and those unable to attend evenings. All are urged to attend and assist.
Mrs. M. Andrew wife of Prof. Andrew assistant superintendent of Cincinnati schools died at home in Cincinnati after several weeks illness from typhoid fever. Her maiden name was Melissa Bush and she grew up in Pickaway county. She leaves four children Lou Wendall Elizabeth and Paul. Prof. Andrew formerly lived in Athens county where he is well known and has many friends. The community offers sympathy to the family.
Hart McCoy of McCoy & Russell was arrested Monday for keeping a saloon open on Sunday. Before Mayor Logan McCoy he pleaded guilty and was fined 26 dollars plus costs total 28 dollars 90 cents.
