Republican plurality counts for Athens county voters in 1894
The Athens county vote total reached 7138 with declines from 1892 and 1893 but a net gain in plurality in 1894. Democrats shifted from Populist alignment, Populist votes fell from 824 to 480, Prohibition votes stood at 269. About six hundred Republicans stayed home, a factor in the reduced overall majorities and a note urging stronger turnout for 1896. Also a brief ad for Magic os carpet dyes at Cline's barmacy.

Saloon Opened in West End Without License
A few weeks ago George Robinett arrived in town, bought property, and opened a saloon in the West End with a self described satisfactory business. On recommendation he procured liquor stock on time and opened without a license. A government detective visited last Friday to investigate, but Robinett was absent, not seen since Thursday, and Mrs. Robinett now runs the business with no arrests yet.

The jail work supervisor notes an interesting meeting held November 7 with six workers present. Miss Agnes M. Walsh of Newton Iowa sister of Mrs. J. A. Drake was re elected county superintendent of public schools by a strong majority. The Union plans a parlor meeting soon. The national convention at Baltimore is a major program focus. The last Union meeting at Mrs. Holmes home was very interesting. Miss Morse Mrs. Burns and Mrs. Armstrong reported the state convention. State minutes were distributed and copies available from Miss E. C. McVay. The minutes are remarkedly artistic this year containing leading state workers pictures.
