Cincinnati Zoo Defends Shooting Harambe After Enclosure Incident

The Cincinnati Zoo director defended the decision to shoot Harambe the 17 year old gorilla after a 4 year old boy fell into the enclosure. He said the ape was agitated and disoriented and that tranquilizers would have worsened the danger to the child. The zoo reported the boy climbed a 3 foot barrier and the animal was shot about 10 minutes after the encounter. Public reaction included protests and petitions while some zoos offered sympathy. The exhibit barrier will be reviewed for improvements.
