Memorial Day honors Civil War veteran on The Ridges
Memorial Day ceremony on The Ridges honored Union veteran John Meek of the 75th Ohio Infantry Company B. Judge George McCarthy recalled Meek as a tall farm boy from Vinton County and musician who enlisted in 1862 and fought at Cedar Mountain and Gettysburg before capture in 1864. Meek, later discharged in 1865, farmed in Chester Township and was later treated in a mental hospital.

A coalition in Athens circulated petitions to place an initiative on the fall ballot to decriminalize cannabis. The package, dubbed Athens Cannabis Ordinance or TACO, was filed with the city auditor. It would remove fines for minor cannabis offenses and set felony fines at $1, while eliminating jail, probation, court costs, and related punishments.
