Fire Threat Douses as Herbet E. Jones Towboat Track Converts
About 10 days ago a minor fire on the Herbert E. Jones stern wheeler at Verona Pa threatened the vessel while conversion into a night club continued. Firefighters quickly doused the flames after workmen heated the boiler while burning wood. The Jason later renamed Herbert E. Jones, was built in 1939 and changed hands several times before joining Amherst Industries. The piece also notes dam demolitions for the Meldahl project and ongoing shifts from steam to diesel at Ohio Barge Line.
