Four Camp LeJeune Marines were seriously injured when their car lost control on Route 17 four miles south of Point Pleasant. Driver James Lindsay, 19, Knights Town Indiana, and Peter DiGiacomo Jr., 20, Canton, along with Robert McGee, 29, Goshen Indiana, were in fair condition. Lonnie Cox, 18, Fort Wayne Indiana, was listed in good condition after the vehicle veered onto the left berm, crossed the highway, hit a bank and overturned.
Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara will arrive in Athens to receive Ohio University’s Doctor of Humane Letters during the 204th commencement. Joseph J. Stone 57, former Murray City school administrator, died on arrival at Mount St. Mary after a heart attack at home. A Murray City native, he taught and administered in village schools for 29 years, including Botkins, and retired last year. He was a Navy veteran and held multiple local service posts.
Judy Garland, 41, was removed from the critical list at a Hong Kong hospital today after a coma lasting more than 12 hours. She collapsed Thursday at her hotel and was rushed by taxi, receiving oxygen and emergency treatment.
Traffic deaths during the Memorial Day weekend appeared lower than expected with 23 killed since Thursday 6 p.m. local time. The National Safety Council estimated 410 to 490 fatalities possible over the 78 hour period ending at midnight Sunday.
Former Senator William Benton quoted Khrushchev in Paris as saying the United States should use outer space to photograph Cuba and avoid Caribbean crises. Benton, US envoy to Unesco, said Khrushchev claimed Soviet space photographers have images of American bases and suggested Washington drop reconnaissance flights. President Johnson supports ongoing reconnaissance flights despite the suggestion.
