U S Air Strikes Kill Viet Cong in Vietnam Valley

In Binh Thuan Province Vietnamese fighters killed 85 Viet Cong after a 20 minute bomber run. United States Navy planes attacked two military barracks and other sites north of the DMZ in a second straight day of strikes. News notes Hanoi Haiphong region targets and peace talk attempts.

Junta Rejects UN Cease-Fire Plea in Dominican War

In Santo Domingo the Dominican junta rejected a United Nations cease-fire appeal as Gen. Antonio Imbert Barrera pressed a tank offensive toward rebel pockets north of the east–west corridor. Rebel leader Caamano Deno signaled willingness to a truce while U Thant envoy Mayobre reported mixed signals from both sides. Explosions rocked the capital waterfront and the United States could not confirm accusations of dynamiting by U.S. troops.

Ohio Tax Study Bill Aims to Ensure Equitable Burden

The Ohio House moved toward passage of an emergency act creating an Ohio Tax Study Commission to examine state and local tax structures. The bill authorizes a tax research director and staff, with findings due by February 1, 1967, and a $150,000 appropriation for the study. The same day the House approved a $190 million capital improvements measure funded by a 1963 bond issue, with education facilities receiving the bulk of the funds.

Little Joe II Rocket Explodes During Test at White Sands

The Little Joe II rocket failed in flight during a high altitude safety test at White Sands Missile Range New Mexico. NASA said the explosion occurred about halfway through a 40 second burn, during a mission to verify rescue and abort procedures for a moon bound Saturn launch. The 14 ton capsule separated and descended by parachutes to the desert floor. capsule damage was not yet confirmed.
