A Boeing 720B inaugurating Karachi to London service crashed in desert sands near Cairo Airport killing 120 of 126 aboard. The crash, amid fog, occurred as the plane prepared for its final approach. six survivors were Pakistani.
Brig. Gen. Antonio Imbert Barrera announced the junta's absolute control after overrunning a rebel radio station and forcing a collapse of resistance in northern Santo Domingo. He rejected any compromise, while a UN peace mission said a 12 hour cease fire was agreed to allow Red Cross removal of dead and wounded.
David J. McDonald will step down as president of the United Steelworkers next month after withdrawing his protests to the Feb. 9 election in which he narrowly lost to I. W. Abel. He aims to avoid a lengthy legal fight amid contract talks and potential Sept. 1 strike, ending a 12 year tenure marked by major gains for older workers and pension increases.

The House Ways and Means Committee moved to repeal the excise tax on passenger automobiles over four years. Major auto firms pledged to pass savings to buyers, cutting the price of an average car by about $230. The plan would reduce revenue by nearly $5 billion, with first year cuts around $1.75 billion, and may reach a House vote the week of May 31.
New York autograph dealer Charles Hamilton returned a letter written in Mrs. Kennedy's hand to Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson after a demand from Mrs. Johnson's press secretary. Secret Service agents visited the dealer as he prepared to send the Jackie signature letter to the White House.
Frank Cushing and his son Frank Jr. survived a 37 day raft voyage across the Pacific after departing Guam to seek rare fish. Their oil drum raft, improvised sail, limited fuel, and celestial navigation helped them reach Calayan Island in the Philippines where they were rescued and later flown to Clark Air Base Hospital.
