President Johnson urged Congress to repeal Section 14B of the Taft Hartley Act wiping out right to work in 19 states. He asked to extend minimum wage coverage to 4.5 million workers but not raise the current $1.25. He proposed double time after 48 hours and a broader unemployment insurance overhaul while keeping the 40 hour week steady.
In 1955 the attorney general listed 274 subversive groups. today only 21 are believed active, disclosed by Assistant Attorney General J. Walter Yeagley in testimony to a House subcommittee on March 4.
County commissioners endorse appointing a group to run a new hospital as a non profit corporation. The measure aims to establish a community operated facility with local oversight.
FBI Director J Edgar Hoover told a House Appropriations panel that Soviet secret agents in the United States are a growing menace. He warned they could form the nucleus of a wide clandestine espionage network and that Chinese Communist intelligence activity could rise if recognition leads to a diplomatic mission. Sen. Jim Thorpe of Stark County introduced a measure to legalize abortion in Ohio with two doctors certifying justification. Justifiable cases include rape or incest or risks to the health of the mother or child. The proposal follows sessions after a weekend recess as lawmakers consider a 190 million capital improvements bill.
In Berlin the 19 year old son of Poland's East Berlin economic attache fled to West Berlin two weeks ago and sought political asylum in the United States. Marek Radomski used a diplomatic passport to cross at checkpoint Charlie on May 5. Wladislaw Tykocinski, head of Poland's military mission in West Berlin, also defected and was flown to West Germany.
The United States says 30 U S Navy jets from the 7th Fleet attacked a petroleum storage site at Phu Qui south of Hanoi. Initial reports say heavy damage and a burning target. Strikes mark the first against the North in six days amid broader combat reports across South Viet Nam with Viet Cong and South Vietnamese forces clashing.
Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip arrived in Bonn West Germany for a ten day state visit marking postwar reconciliation. German officials including President Luebke and Chancellor Erhard welcomed them at Wahn Air port as crowds gathered for a historic royal arrival.
