Miss Sarah Witham of Jerseyville and Edward O. Coe of Albany were married May 2 at Jerseyville M I parsonage by Pastor A b k McCullough in a small ceremony. Witham was an active church worker and officer. the couple will reside near Albany with many friends sending congratulations.
Hattie Doan Beebe started schooling at the Doan school house on April 29. Elisha Rowland moved to Zenas Frost’s farm near the village of W. L. Petty. Mrs Bethany Petty and her husband were guests here earlier this week. Harley Petty and his wife moved into the former Dolan residence. I attended a social at the residence of Mrs Polly Cook last Saturday evening.

The first annual Coolville high school commencement was held in Odd Fellows hall on a Friday evening. The program featured music, orations on The Lost Arts and The Progress of Science, a panoply of student essays and recitations, diplomas presented by school leaders, and benediction by Rev. Henderson.
Methodist Church notes summarize visits by Rev E 8 Gillette of Cleveland and Rev L G Matheny of Marshfield on Monday. Professors and pastors spoke at Welliston and Marietta churches. New Gilman Avenue church in Marietta dedicated with Revs Rose and Burns present. Epworth League district convention at Belpre featured Miss Connett and Rev Murdoch, with Miss Rose presenting a paper.
A party of nineteen Athenians departed Tuesday for Lakeside Park on Licking reservoir, thirty three miles east of Columbus. They travel by Ohio Central Lines under agent F H Hysell and will stay two days. The outing promises enjoyable fishing and a merry time for all participants and even the fish seem set for a picnic. The group includes Frank S. Grones and wife, H H Wickham and wife, B F Witman and wife, C C Sheldon and wife, Mrs. Wilbur Scott, Mrs. J L Pickering, Mrs. F M Root, H D Henry and wife, F H Hysell and wife, Winfield Scott and wife, P G Hibbard and M L Means.
The ten state intercollegiate event featured six colleges with O A Haverback of Knox taking first and Charles W Wood of Beloit second. Elected president H C Haze Doane University and vice president D C Blair Wesleyan University with Samuel L McCune Ohio University as secretary treasurer. Next contest set for Topeka Kansas.
Citizens enjoyed an open air concert by the Athens Military Band at the court house corner last Friday evening. A temporary movable bandstand will remain for weekly summer performances by permission of the county commissioners. Next Friday’s concert features Dr. Fred Hibbard of Frost and plans to continue concerts each Friday evening. The band asks parents to keep children from causing disturbances during performances.
On Saturday April 27 judges de Steigner Sibley and Coultrap met in Athens and named jury commissioners for the counties of the third subdivision of the seventh judicial district. Athens county appointees were Capt. C. A. Cable Col. George W. Baker J. W. Murphy and W. R. Goddard. They were instructed to draw 250 jurors for the coming year.
The Athens Water Wheel and Machine Company made an assignment to Auditor A J Frame for the benefit of creditors on Friday of last week. Liabilities are about 15000 dollars and assets are likely enough to cover the debt. The firm has not paid for several years. Next Sunday afternoon May 12 the formal laying of the church corner-stone will be conducted with Rt. Rev. Bishop John A. Watterson of Columbus as orator. The ceremony includes sermon, psalm chants, blessing, litany, and the stone's placement. Names of rulers and officials, clergy and papers will be sealed within the stone. Also reported: Mr. Freak Hooper and Miss Stella Bean wed at Mrs. Davis's Marietta home, then to Toledo. Hooper longtime Athens County educator now assistant superintendent at Hocking Coal & Ore Transfer Co. They will reside in Toledo. The Messemeter and Heraup extend cordial wedding wishes.
Word from C. H. Dean in Washington Indiana states the council awarded Athens Brick Company a contract to supply about 2.25 million bricks for streets. The plant has stock but needs smaller rounded bricks, likely requiring full production. Operations start soon with steady summer work. mining slowdowns may affect gas supply but are hoped to resolve.
