Rolf Gunder goes to Albany to study dentistry and plan barber work weekly.
Mary and Victoria Wood are away at school as C. F. Dixon guides the thriving local school. Farmers cheer as late rains ease forebodings and a fair crop may come, save for peaches. Rev. A. E. Craig preaches at Valley church and will give a memorial address in three weeks. Delegates from the Valley A. E. attend the Marshfield county convention on May 4 and 25. A township meeting elected officers: President A. H. Bush, Vice President A. H. Matheny, Secretary H. C. Brooks, Treasurer Alice.
Presbyterian and Methodist notes recount visits by Dr. and Mrs. H. C. Rutter, A. B. Frame, and others to Gallipolis Piqua Amesville and Marietta. Reports mention Bertha Hoover ill, Tullis returning from Pomery, and upcoming Epworth League phonographic show. Christina and Disciples events noted with delegates named and plans for the Chattanooga convention.
In Athens county a dispute over election tallies and witness affidavits triggers sharp accusations against committee members and Capt. Cable. Letters from local figures contest results, declare fraud allegations baseless, and demand removal of supporters from a delegate paper. The letter notes Stahl and Henshaw’s testimonies as unreliable compared with the six committee members who tallied ballots.
The Common Pleas Court opened Monday morning with Judge Coultrap of McArthur on the bench. Disposed cases include Dodderer vs Baker with $110.13 judgment, Moore vs Hooper with $118.61 judgment, Buchtel Coal Company account approved, and receivership items totaling $197.97 received with compensation and expenses. Jurisdiction over various civil actions, sheriff sales returns, and a move to remove Hanna Paint Co. suit to the U S Circuit Court were noted. Prisoners arraigned pled guilty in several cases with fines set and costs apportioned. Dr Price's Cream Baking Powder won a World's Fair award.
Cara Gunper declares she was not pledged to any candidate in the recent primary. She states no aid from Capt. Cable or Mr. Falloon and that she refused pledges when pressed by Cable. She says she voted for Falloon at the central committee meeting, believing it best for the Republican party.
The World’s Columbian Exposition showcased improvements in the mechanical arts and medicinal progress. Eminent physicians affirm that new medicinal agents are equally important, noting Syrup of Figs as a superior strengthening laxative among all others.
Passenger schedule from Athens to Zanesville on May 28 and 29 shows departure at 6:00 a.m. and 11:22 a.m. with arrivals at 9:06 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. The service claims 2 to 3 hours faster than alternative routes. Agent H Hysexun announces the offer.
