The Air Force fired its Titan from a 146 foot underground shaft marking a milestone toward a hard to attack strategic weapon. Tests showed Titans can withstand launch pressures from bomb proof silos as part of a broader push to deter attacks and strengthen space and intercontinental missile programs.
President Kennedy wins a major victory as the minimum wage bill passes both chambers. The measure raises the rate from 1.00 to 1.15 in four months and to 1.25 in two years, expanding coverage to retail and service workers including 3.6 million people and firms with cross state commerce.
In a Wednesday committee action the Senate Education Committee recommended passage of bills to create technical institutes and branch university districts. Chairman Sen. Ross Pepple said the branch bill may allow three state university branches to locate in Cleveland for next fall term.
Robert E. McCann, a 60 year old American businessman held in Red China for ten years on espionage charges, died today of cancer at Clark Air Force Base hospital near Manila.
