Cape Canaveral witnesses America's first spaceman Alan Shepard launch aboard a Redstone rocket at 9 34 a m EST. The capsule reported OK systems and manual control during ascent. Recovery forces tracked the descent and capsule landing despite weather delays and high G forces.
Alan B. Shepard Jr., America's first space man, lifted off from Cape Canaveral aboard Redstone and reached 115 miles high before splashing down 302 miles downrange. The 15 minute flight included a weightless period and recovery by helicopters, with postflight medical checks and plans for a Washington visit.
Navy medical officer LT CMDR Victor Pra the of Bethesda Md dies after a 25 foot fall from a rescue helicopter following a record 113500 foot ascent in a plastic balloon. Cmdr Malcolm Ross survived. Pra the died aboard the carrier Antietam 72 hours later. The ascent reached 212 miles above the Gulf with the balloon launched from the carrier off the Mississippi River.
President Kennedy signed a bill expanding the minimum wage to cover an additional 3,624,000 workers. The law raises the covered minimum to 1.25 dollars per hour by 1963, with new entrants receiving 1 dollar for three years and 1.25 dollars after five years.
Columbus report states the Ohio honor prison camp at Gallipolis will be ready to receive prisoners by July 1 after rewiring repairs. The camp will be expanded to house 40 men, announced Correction Chief Maury C. Koblentz.
A 164 foot towboat, MV Orco, joined the inland barge fleet in Cincinnati after a Thursday christening by Mrs. M. C. Creditor. It marks the second million dollar addition in a month to the largest fleet in the industry.

Twelve Cuban exiles believed to be survivors of a failed invasion were kept under security in New Orleans after a 15 day voyage across the Gulf of Mexico in a 25 foot open sail boat. Delirious and wild eyed they arrived Thursday.
Republican leaders in Columbus seek to override Gov. Michael V. DiSalle’s veto of a bill increasing local highway funding from auto license tag revenue. DiSalle says the measure would reduce Ohio Highway Department revenue and, even with federal matching, deprive the state of $32 million in highway activity.
A Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp spokesman said 76 furloughed workers at the Ravenswood works have been recalled, bringing total recalls to 300 since February as orders increase. The Ravenswood facility produces aluminum sheet, plate, foil and primary ingot.
An Ohio House committee says unemployment compensation fund rates should rise to align income and outgo. The fund’s average annual outgo is $167 million, while current income runs about $106 million.
Miami reports detail mass detentions of 25 000 to 40 000 Cubans and foreigners after a mid April anti Castro invasion. Detainees were held in Havana in venues like the Sports Palace and Blanquita Theater with severe food and sanitation shortages and instances of uprisings.
