On May 19 the Gallia County Medical Society will host a community vaccination with Sabin oral polio vaccine. Gallia County boasts seven years without a polio case and backs the program with endorsements from Dr Francis W Shane and Gary R Short.
Ninety eight of 184 Gallia Academy Junior High School eighth graders taking the Ohio Scholar ship Test in April earned a superior rating, per guidance director Clyde Evans. Top students include Larry Crawford April Brandeberry Harry Amsbury Tom Mc Carty Jerry Humphreys and more.
Gallia County dealers reported 349 vehicle sales in April including 105 new passenger cars and 204 used cars. March totals show 109 new and 202 used, with 13 new trucks and 19 used trucks plus other vehicle types. The clerk’s office issued 948 titles and 249 lien cancellations, with 14 duplicate titles. Four Gallia lawmen attended a crime control clinic in Athens.
Jack Nelson, patient in a Washington DC hospital, received a get well card mailed from Gallipolis that was not postmarked locally. The card slipped through the Gallipolis Post Office and arrived in Washington at about 10 am Wednesday, causing confusion when his wife learned her sister had not left home.
Dr. H. B. Thomas examined ten children at the Gallipolis City Health Department monthly well child clinic. One child was referred to a family doctor. Nurses administered six DPT shots, four polio vaccines, and two smallpox vaccinations. Three school physicals were also given assisted by Mrs. Helen Spriegel and three Holzer Hospital School of Nursing seniors Karen French Johnda McKinney and Toni Compston.
Gallipolis police reported 75 arrests in April with eighteen charged for intoxication among traffic offenses. Nine reckless operation, four drunken driving with two convictions, seven speeding, and five driving the wrong way on a one way street. Two cases were from other departments and two for unpaid fines. Police also investigated 26 accidents, including a minor injury incident.
