Two American climbers reached the Mt Everest summit at 1 p.m. local time and planted the flag. Authorities awaited confirmation of a second ascent and any trace of the Chinese claim while a third American team pursued the peak.
In Beirut reports six pro Nasser ministers and six Revolutionary Council members resign from Syria's government leaving Baath to run a de facto one party regime. The split threatens Arab union talks with Egypt and Iraq and Cairo unity expectations.
Robert K. Domer a 43 year old Canton man was charged with first degree murder after a burning automobile held a charred body. Separate charges were filed in Canton Municipal Court and Massillon Municipal Court in the death of an unnamed victim. The Akron detective bureau linked the corpse possibly to Howard Franklin Riddle an Akron resident. An autopsy in Cleveland had not yet positively ID’d the victim.
Waverly union members ratified a three year contract with Goodyear Atomic Corp. Local 3689 president C. A. Romine said the agreement provides an eight cent hourly raise each year for the next three years. The top hourly wage at the plant stands at 3.37. Theologian Dr. Thomas S. Kepler 65 died Thursday in Oberlin.
Ohio Attorney General William B. Saxbe warned merchants they may be part of a banco fraud by distributing match books advertising western ranches for as little as 1 down. Securities Chief Ralph A. Winter said firms are unlicensed in Ohio. In Cincinnati, GE jet engine plant at Evendale could shut if 25 fire inspectors strike.
Two small Ohio wheat farmers join others in asking a Washington court to bar the nationwide May 21 referendum on the administration's wheat plan. Attorneys Winthrop B. French of Wake man and Richard J. Jooker of New London challenge the constitutionality, claiming advance written notice unfairly discriminates against small farmers.
Birmingham jails held about 700 arrested in a wave of protests tied to Haiti relations, with 300 plus booked in city jail and hundreds more in juvenile and county facilities. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. vowed continued demonstrations as thousands of pupils and adults converged on City Hall amid coordinated marches and picketing.
J Ed gar Hoover, entering his 40th year as FBI director, warned of a tragic breakdown of law and order. He cited a 114 percent rise in serious crime since 1950 and blamed public apathy for not reporting and testifying about crimes. Hoover noted his ascent from a 1917 Justice Department clerk to FBI head, now aged 68.
In Columbus the Sunday closing rule faces possible changes this session. Senate leaders doubt the House approved bill, shaped by Rep. Edmund James, will resolve the issue. Alternative is Sen. Kline Roberts proposal to soften penalties to a 5 to 25 dollar fine per violation.
In Ravenswood West Virginia Roger Snyder suffered a fractured jaw and a severe chin wound requiring nine stitches after a seventh inning collision with two Point Pleasant players. Larry Waugh and Gil Johnson were treated for facial and foot injuries. Ravenswood lost 9 to 1 as Point Pleasant won.
A steam-filled furnace explosion at the McLouth Steep Corp plant in Trenton Michigan injures 38 workers from a Buffalo NY firm repairing the furnace. Most injuries are flash burns and cuts. five remain hospitalized. Most victims stay in motels.
Washington remembers Medal of Honor recipients as 290 living winners are invited to a White House lawn reception. The 234 guests include veterans from Spanish American and Mexican wars, Philippine Insurrection, Boxer Rebellion, two world wars, and Korea, some in wheelchairs or with injuries. Kennedy greets each with a firm handshake.
Pittsburgh based oil executive defends depletion allowances as vital to economy and security while Marathon Oil Co. executive Brabson argues the current percentage is inadequate. Brabson cites tax concessions aiding new oil reserves and petroleum product development in remarks prepared for an American Petroleum Institute meeting.
