Observatory planned for former TB ward site on The Ridges
Ohio University will build an astronomy observatory at The Ridges former tuberculosis ward site with a 2 ton telescope. Construction starts September and aims to finish by December 15 2016. The observatory will be open to students and community members and housed telescope will be relocated from Clippinger Hall.

County considers on-site dog spay neuter facility
Athens County Dog Shelter may add a spay neuter clinic to reduce unwanted dogs. Commissioner Chris Chmiel updated colleagues after discussions with Friends of the Shelter Dogs. Dr Josh Ervin would perform surgeries weekly. Friends would fund equipment and a grant aids costs. Adoption fees may rise to cover vet fees while memorandums of understanding are finalized.

Fleeing suspect fished from pond after traffic stop near Route 33
Jelani L. Walker of Detroit faces first degree felony heroin trafficking and possession charges after a traffic stop near The Plains. He fled into Cochran Transportation Services pond, was retrieved after about an hour, and troopers found about 300 grams of heroin intended for sale. Bond was raised to 250000, with a preliminary hearing set for March 30.

Athens County Sherriff: canine Ijo to leave county after unprovoked bite
Athens County Sheriff Rodney Smith said canine Ijo will not work in the county again after an unprovoked bite of a male inmate at Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail during a March 9 drug search. Deputy Kulchar received a written reprimand for failing to clear the area. the incident is under investigation and may lead to retraining or new canine selection.
