Athens County prepares for the 2016 emergence of Brood V cicadas. Ed Brown of the extension office notes the noisy, harmless insects will surface in May to June, with thousands of visitors expected as eastern Ohio towns brace for the event.
Athens plans a third roundabout by summer 2017 on Stimson Avenue. The city seeks $500,000 in grant funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission to cover a new access road from Stimson Avenue to Mill Street.
Athens County commissioners approve continuation of EMS staffing at NumberFest next month despite deputies not providing site security. EMS Chief Rick Callebs cites risk of simultaneous calls and loss of control if EMS must rely on private responders. Last year EMS treated 80 attendees with 20 transported to hospital. promoter reimburses costs, and a deputy presence may be offered inside the event. The festival is set for April 16 with a second EMS squad planned at the Athens station.
A Canfield man, James D. Howard, 25, is jailed in Southeastern Ohio Regional Jail after alleged incidents in Athens and Hocking counties. He faces burglary and weapons under disability charges in Athens County Court for allegedly assaulting a staff member at Ohio University’s Bird Arena and withdrawing from classes on Monday. Police traced Howard to a firearm purchase attempt and found a newly bought gun and survival gear in his vehicle after a manhunt involving Logan Walmart and a Camouflage clothing purchase. The incident at Bird Arena prompted a campus police release and a subsequent multi county investigation.
