A chaotic local meeting Tuesday night near Hun-Thomas involved Local TM Kein and his son Robert Msiding. Men were injured and rushed to a physician nearby as officers reported injuries of varying nature shortly before 9 o'clock.

Athens County Fair will not allow legalized horse race betting this summer regardless of state law. County fair secretary J W Slaughter cited a $100 daily license fee plus 10 percent of bets to the state and up to $25 daily inspector costs as prohibitive. W. R. Riggle a 64 year old Zanesville bridge carpenter working near Jacksonville died after being stricken during a heat wave. He collapsed yesterday afternoon as temperatures rose to 99 and died in a New York Central Railroad construction car. He leaves a wife and two daughters who came to claim the body.
The second week of June heat killed 307 horses across Athens and Meigs Counties with an estimated loss of 46 000 dollars. County farm agent T H Johnson notes farmers rushed to water animals and that horse losses threaten future farm work and 4 H horse projects.
The body of Eugene Lavender a 28 year old man killed in a truck auto crash at Swan Creek was identified by his father Joan L Lavender and siblings Clarence Lavender and Mrs Lola Hawley at the Wetherholt Morgue. Lavender had left Bellaire to visit a girlfriend and planned to enlist in the US Navy after today. He had worked recently in the coal fields near Hazard Kentucky.
Geo. Schultz 80, well known Sand Run resident, found in the Sand Run reservoir Tuesday afternoon after being missing for about an hour. Coroner called. Survived by one son and two daughters. Funeral Thursday at 3 p.m. at his son Charles's home in Sand Run. Burial at Carbon Hill.
Murray City plans a June 23 celebration to mark the restoration of the Union in the Hocking Valley. A parade forms at 6:30 p.m. with drums and bands from surrounding towns, followed by speakers and a dance at the Eagles Hall.
Mrs. Charles Lomax 75 mother of Athens barber Chris Lomax died Monday evening at her grandson Roy Lomax’s home in Columbus. She lived in Jamestown and leaves two sons Chris and William Lomax, two sisters, and thirteen grandchildren. Funeral set for Jamestown Thursday afternoon.
In Trenton on June 21 the state senate approved the Siracusa relocalizing horse racing measure. The bill now advances to the governor for final action.
Buffington Memorial in Buffing on Island Memorial Park at Port Mind will be dedicated Sunday October 1. Park executive committee met at Prof A W McKay Coal Street to set the schedule and note ceremonies will occur later in the summer than originally planned. Auditor J Clyde Edmundson said checks for schools cannot be mailed until these balancing statements are filed. In Columbus on June 21, the Ohio Legislature defeated Governor White’s 40 million dollar retail sales tax bill 68 votes were required to pass. The House vote fell 37 to 0 against the measure. Eighteen senators killed the unemployment insurance bill by opposing removing it from the labor committee. The outcome ends the administration’s revenue program for now.
Columbus reports the House defeated the sales tax bill with Governor White saying the sales tax is now off the table for the time being. A substitute program by Sen D J Gunsett and Sen Frank Whittemore would raise about 18 million dollars for schools and 15 million for relief, including gas tax diversion, an earned income tax, and taxes on beer, cigars, cosmetics, and vending machines. The Senate caucus backed moving the substitute forward while the calendar committee removed other revenue measures from active consideration.
Federal Judge George W. McClintic declared the West Virginia law permitting 3.2 percent beer unconstitutional. He warned that indictments could be returned against beer fliers and that breweries cannot be legally operated in the state.
