Ohio Attorney General Bricker weighs in on county budget actions approving a $2,000 special levy for agricultural extension work. The opinion clarifies the county commission may appropriate for special purposes or transfer funds within limits, but not exceed legal authority.
Ohio will receive road fund money under the national recovery act. Public Works Administrator Donald H. Sawyer announces Ohio’s share of 400 million for highway construction expected to start soon. Ohio lists 480.09 million in projects, and Adjutant General Henderson notes Ohio as first to file a comprehensive program.
In Gallipolis a jury found that Stanley Dillon, a Crown City township officer, acted within his rights when firing at A Norris Simms during an arrest at the Crown City jail last fall. Simms alleged the shot aimed to kill and left him with brain-base bullet injuries. Dillon had pleaded guilty to shooting with intent to kill and received a suspended sentence.
The Rev Lester L Cherrington of Batavia Ohio died at Christ Hospital Cincinnati. A 37 year minister, he leaves a widow a son Professor Homer Cherrington of Iowa State University and three daughters Edith of Cleveland Jenny of Akron and Ruth of Batavia. He formerly served Athens and Marietta. His son was a longtime Ohio University faculty member.
The first unit of the national forestry army will arrive Thursday morning and move to a camp named Camp Washington in Decatur Township near Little Hocking. It will be set up on the Clarence Dinsmore farm two miles south of Cutler and eight miles north of Little Hocking. Workers will be assigned to the woods once camp setup is completed.
Mr and Mrs Fred Burch of near Canaanville sue Frank Martin in Athens County Common Pleas for 5000 each claiming injuries from a January 10 collision on Richland Avenue. They allege speeding drunk driving and driving on the wrong side. Mrs Burch suffers severe facial injuries and shock while her husband reports three broken ribs and lost work time.
Mrs. Blanche Stuckey was sentenced to six months in Meigs County Jail for contributing to the delinquency of a minor after aiding her 15 year old son Marvin Stuckey's escape from the Meigs County Children's Home. Marvin was returned from relatives in Letart. W. V. Donald Hill was moved to Columbus to answer a non support charge. Edgar Nedels and William Fox were held for investigation.
Eugene Lavender a 28 year old Perry County Kentucky unemployed mechanic was killed when his roadster sideswiped a Covert Baking Company truck from Middleport near Swan Creek 16 miles south of Gallipolis at 130 this morning. The impact crushed his head and severed his left arm while the truck driver Paul Dobbins escaped uninjured. The accident occurred on State Route 7 near the Miss Mary Kennedy home and investigators believe Lavender was either blinded by headlights or asleep. Lavenders body was taken to a focal mortuary for word from his parents.
Washington June 2040 A two cent stamp will be required for local mail delivery within the same city or town starting July 1. Rates to outside destinations remain at three cents. Postmaster General Farley said the department hopes to regain business lost when rates rose to three cents last July. Many firms have used messengers for local communications.
New York June reports Iowa New Hampshire and Connecticut voted on wet and dry issue. A wet victory of two to one was forecast in New Hampshire while Connecticut planned repeal slate to a prohibition convention.
Columbus report shows Ohio taxed 68,787,137 gallons of gasoline in April, down 11,842,955 from April last year, but up 6,677,132 from March. April tax revenue totaled 2,751,458 dollars as announced by the state tax commission.

A 2000 dollar blaze at the Co. N. Mackinnon home on Church Street started at 9 00 am from sparks in a flue after rubbish burning in the furnace. Athens Volunteer Fire Department quickly extinguished the fire damaging the southeast roof. Chesapeake & Ohio Railway reports May net income of 2,080,504 dollars, up nearly 20 percent from May 1932. For January–May 1943 total net income reached 7,943,400 dollars, compared with 7,750,856 dollars in the prior period.
