Italian forces hold the Montello and Piave front as Austrian assaults falter. Captured officers report massive enemy losses and failed objectives. Major General Von Kronstatt wounded, Hungarian 106th Infantry wiped out, 14th division suffered severe casualties.
London reports indicate the Italian situation is more favorable than yesterday. In the Momgello sector danger is greatly diminished and Austrian gains between the Brenta and the Astico rivers are reduced. Three Austrian attacks between the Brenta and the Paive were repulsed.
The New Pittsburg Coal Company and Stratton Brothers of Murray City were fined 30 and 100 dollars by State Food Director Croxton for taking excessive profits on flour and selling flour in excessive amounts. The fines go to the Red Cross. Also noted is a projection that over five billion dollars will flow into European rebuild projects in the five years after the war. Horace Palmer resigns his commission and returns to Camp Sheridan. He plans to pursue civilian life or other service opportunities. A meeting this evening invites one candidate for initiation after the gathering.
Local Union No. 1205 of Millfield will raise a large American flag June 25 at 1 PM at the Poston Consolidated Coal Company site. The event includes a service flag, Athens Ladies Band, Bomber McGinnis, miners’ officials, and ground refreshments. Parade forms at the company store, then proceeds to the mine with marchers given small flags. All are welcome.
Washington reports continued artillery in the Chateau-Thierry region and on the Marne front Tuesday. General Pershing says last night patrols crossed the Marne and took several prisoners.
Dayton workers on five streetcar lines walked out at midnight in a strike demanding higher pay union recognition and better conditions. The action halted city transit as motormen and conductors began key labor protests.
United Press reports that the War Trade Board announced the prohibition on importing manufactured rubber articles after June 25. The ruling takes effect soon and affects manufacturers and suppliers relying on rubber products from overseas sources.
Cincinnati chief clerk R W Kent of the District Exemption Board says most physically able men in the service age will be called to bear arms. Unmarried deferments on industrial grounds move to Class 1 on July 1. Married men leave nonessential industries to fill roles, and unfit men will be required to work in war industries.
Washington reports Colonel Tom C. Crossan of the Ohio National Guard is slated for retirement for alleged inefficiency. Friends defend him, arguing dismissal would be unjust to a conscientious officer who improved the division. Crossan led the Seventh Ohio to Camp Sheridan in Alabama last October and supervised military police and division trains. His home is New Lexington.
German assault on Rheims front from Vrigny to Fort La Pompeii failed as French defenses repelled attacks. About 36 000 German troops involved in attempts northeast of Sillery and near Rheims with heavy enemy losses. British patrols and German raid repulsals also reported by Haig.
Grace Ross, 19, of Nelsonville, charged with stealing 45 from Mrs. Cora Tigner of Columbus at Union Depot, was sentenced by Judge Osborne in city court to thirty days in the work house and a $100 fine plus costs.
A large audience gathered in Ewing Hall to watch the college Dramatic Club performance, but the play was canceled as only two club members were in town. Prof. Cooper announced the absence of others, citing a low turnout that halted the production.
Columbus Ohio June 19. Ohio Association of Police Chiefs discussed cooperating with Federal officials to suppress crime against the government. The visitors also inspected the state penitentiary during the meeting.
Albany Grange will meet Saturday evening June 22 in Albany Ohio instead of Saturday afternoon as planned.
The first colored registrants depart Athens county for Camp Sherman today. Induction orders for 143 men to leave June 26 were issued Tuesday night. Names listed include Stretcher Bates Athens Lawrence Pepers Nelsonville Ear nest Smith Kerre John Jones Buch tel Warren Kennedy Lathrop.
President Dr Alston Ellis of Ohio University will retire to join national war effort committees. Despite his 70 years, trustees praise his health and leadership, noting seventeen years of prosperous administration. The board hopes he remains able to serve Old Ohio in the future as well.
On June 19 in Lorraine the First American gas projector attack began against Germans north of Toul. American projectors fired 1000 gas shells by electricity, surprising German troops. An ensuing artillery barrage followed while Germans retaliated with a failed gas attack.
Crew of an American steamer arriving at the Atlantic Port reports engaging a German submarine off the Virginia Capes yesterday. Naval gunners scored a clean hit and either sank or disabled the submarine. the American ship was undamaged.

Marietta June 18 Former First Lieutenants Walter A Renner and Willard Lindamood, connected with the Seventh Regiment Ohio National Guard, have resigned their commissions and arrived in Marietta from camp. They intend joining another service branch, saying politics plays a big part in their regiment and expressing dissatisfaction with camp conduct. Company B and the Seventh regiment were among the first called to service and trained at Sheridan while thousands of recruits were sent abroad.
New York report states a Supreme Court jury in Brooklyn awarded Miss Clamerillo seventeen thousand five hundred dollars for the loss of a big toe after an injury on the Coney Island Railroad. Testimony said the accident shortened one leg by three inches and caused the tendons to contract.
The Messenger reports President Ellis will sever his role as executive head once a successor is chosen by the board of trustees. He may join national war work bodies and likely work for the government without salary during the war. Governor Cox will miss delivering the graduates address due to the death of his infant son. Ohio University trustees met Tuesday to approve the teachers and salaries report, naming new instructors and stipends.
Washington reports 130 total today with 30 killed in action 7 died of wounds 92 wounded severely and 1 died of disease. Killed include Bert G. Taylor Malinta Ohio Jeremiah Wood Agosta Ohio Brooks Sebring Ohio Neal O Cincinnati Ohio and others. Wounded severely include Corporal Raymond P D Dunham Lakewood Ohio and several privates from Ohio and nearby towns.
Camp Sherman O June 18 Sherman soldiers work in gas masks one hour daily this week. Between nine and ten oclock morning masks must be worn regardless of duty. Men in regimental quarters did drill with masks on. Guards and mounted units also wore masks. All soldiers wore gas masks by ten oclock. The order aims to accustom the men to wearing them.
Secretary McAdoo issued an appeal urging all Americans to buy war savings stamps during the current campaign. The statement said stamps aid the fighting men by funding food, clothing, and arms, stressing home front support for victory.
A U S government arrest in New York disrupted a scheme to ship machine guns rifles and other ordnance to Mexico for the German government. Three men Gus Colbie Dallas Quist Leo Bert and Franz were detained after components were traced to factories across several states.
