Rome reports the Italians check Austrian forces with bloody defeats at two Piave points and launch a counter offensive on the lower Piave. Austria has redeployed vast forces but gains remain slight as Allied pressure mounts.
New York reports a German submarine was sunk by an American sub off the Virginia Capes last Friday morning. Passengers aboard a Cuban steamer said officers of the American submarine confirmed firing a torpedo after a sighting. Oil and wreckage were seen, with no survivors noted.
London report states British troops conducted raids southwest of Albert and near Moyenneville. Patrols east of the Nieppe Forest captured enemy prisoners and machine guns. Hostile artillery supported actions in the Ancre valley south of Albert and west of Serre.
London reports the armed mercantile cruiser Patria was torpedoed and sunk on June 13. One officer and fifteen men drowned. Lloyds lists five steamers named Patria.
Paris reports success of local operations south of the Aisne and Amblony with captures including two officers and around 100 prisoners. French patrols between the Ourcq and the Marne also took prisoners.
Raymond Connett of Athens will depart this evening for Fortress Monroe Virginia to join the Coast Artillery Defenses of Chesapeake Bay. He is voluntarily inducted under competent orders.
London dispatch reports American troop arrivals in Europe eclipsing records. Morning Post notes amazing weekend economies at debarkation ports. A special meeting is set for Wednesday at 8, with initiation and no meeting Tuesday evening. John B. Cross. E. R.
Mr and Mrs 8 F Hooper of Lancaster Street learn their son Captain Emmett L Hooper has arrived safely in France. The postcard confirms his transport arrival. He serves with Ambulance Company No 17 Fifth Sanitary Train Fifth Division AEF after a prior stint on medical staff at Athens State Hospital.
London reports British naval aviators dropped twenty four tons of bombs on Zeebrugge Ostend and Bruges between June 13 and 16. One British plane failed to return.
East St. Louis Illinois June 18 One factory producing war material was destroyed and two others damaged by a blaze believed to be incendiary. The loss is described as heavy with substantial monetary damage.
A Berlin dispatch via Wolff Bureau to Amsterdam claims American prisoners in Germany are not ill treated. They are not shown to the public, not insulted, and not stoned. Food in the camps is adequate and in line with current German conditions.
Washington reports Marine Corps casualty list shows 103 more Marines lost at Chateau-Thierry with 45 killed in action and 31 severely wounded. Names include Corporal William L. Griffin of Williams town and Corporal Clifford S. Cushman of Toledo while Walter B. Duncan of East Cleveland is among the severely wounded. Washington also lists War Department results from the west front with 49 names: 10 killed in action, 33 severely wounded, plus other single deaths and one death from airplane accident or disease. Names include Corporal Robert J. Miller of Caledonia and Private Willard Weiler of Ironton.
Thirteen American soldiers on a patrol night June 13 14 were ambushed by a German unit over three times their strength. They fought their way back and all were wounded. General Pershing reported the engagement to the War Department.
German patrols near Luneville were driven off after a brief clash with American forces. The War Department confirms Wisconsin and Michigan National Guard troops, forming the 32nd Division, are first U.S. units to fight on former German soil in Alsace, with several Americans reported missing.
In St. Paul on June 18 J A Burnquist held a substantial lead over C A Lindbergh in the Republican gubernatorial race as more than a third of yesterday’s primary votes were counted. W L Comstock was chosen governor by the Democrats. Senator Knute Nelson narrowly beat Jasper Peterson who was convicted of espionage act violation. Rep Lundeen, who opposed entering the war, appears defeated by Walter Newton.
United Press war expert J W T Mason reports Austro Hungarian forces narrow their offensive toward roads to Venice while Italian defense stabilizes the northern front. Crossing the Piave complicates the drive, with German aid possible and Hindenburg facing crisis as war effort risks erosion.
Washington June 17 The Military Subcommittee unanimously approved the provision in the appropriation bill authorizing the President to call all draft age men who can be trained and equipped for national service.
At yesterday's county meeting the commission heard many road petitions and held a final Wyatt road hearing in Bern. They ruled that if petitioners settle with one damager, the board will cover the other two claims. The dog pound moved from the sheriff's barn to the fair grounds due to noise from chained dogs. Women who do fancy work don’t fancy work.

He says the sale is complete and warns buyers that the vehicle now belongs to another and he will not sell bug gies again. He asks for protection from constant calls and reflects on the dangers of want ads.
New York June 18 President Newcomb Carlton of Western Union Telegraph Company publicly declined to accept the War Labor Board decision in the dispute with the Commercial Telegraphers Union of America unless compelled by the war government. He said the ruling was not binding due to lack of unanimity and warned against outside interference risking public service.
Another Marine Virgil Davis of Millfield was sent to Cincinnati Monday by E. R. Lash, the local recruiting officer for the United States Marine Corps.
Walter C. Bigham of Attica was sentenced to life in the Ohio Penitentiary for the murder of his wife Mary Bigham on August 28 1917. A new trial was ruled and sentence suspended pending appeal. Mrs Bigham was found with a dagger in her heart.
Mrs Ima Shelton and three children died when their automobile stalled on a railroad crossing in Bardstown Kentucky June 18. They were en route to a party when a train struck their car.
Washington June 18 Major General Morrison was assigned command of the Western Department with headquarters in San Francisco to relieve General Treat. Morrison departs for Italy to head a military mission.
In a late session today lawmakers unanimously approved increasing the number of permanent enlistment personnel to 131 485. The decision was reported from Washington on June 18.
London dispatch reports on the Italian front that Austrians have thrown fourteen bridges across the Piave river but enemy forces are checked by concentrated Italian and allied positions. The situation is described as most critical by a semi official patch.
