United Press reports from June 20 that German reserves were moved to renew pressure near Paris as American forces captured Belleau Wood. The Twenty-eighth Division and Fifth Prussian Guard suffered heavy losses while aiding new attacks along the Marne and Aisne lines.
United Press reports censored messages show large peace protests in Berlin Cologne and Hamburg met by military police with deaths and arrests. Cavalry sent to Vienna as bread riots erupt with mobs attacking the premier's residence and bakeries amid possible martial law. Discontent spreads to Neustadt and provinces as Vienna faces ration cuts.
Washington reports the State Department formally asked the Spanish embassy and Swedish legation to investigate assaults on the American consulate and hospital at Tabriz as a precursor to a war declaration against Turkey. Athens county must furnish three men for Call 754 for 100 grammar school graduates with mechanical experience or aptitude who will go to the University of Akron on July 1. Only white men physically qualified can be accepted. Volunteers may be accepted until Friday evening June 21 when the quota will be filled by involuntary induction. Athens county was not assigned a quota for another call for 123 men to go into similar work at the University of Cincinnati on the same date.
A dog owned by a Malvern druggist chewed through four dollars of one cent postage stamps left on a desk. The owner suspects the animal acted from patriotism, believing that Uncle Sam selling more stamps helps his business.
After hours damage at the public playgrounds a youth dented a new slide and confessed. Police expect further confessions from boys who broke locks and vandalized equipment as authorities monitor the grounds and plan to make an example of the culprits.
