City Receives $1 Million EDA Water Expansion Grant
The Economic Development Administration awards the city a 1.03 million grant to fund 50 percent of water system expansion costs. Projects include new mains and reservoirs for Route 33N 50E and South Athens with a new well field and plant expansion. First work will be the South Athens project. U S Representative Moeller says it will spur local business growth and a stronger economy.

City Sewage Plant Expansion Utilization Report
Service Director Dwight Robinson said about 75 percent of the new sewage treatment addition is in use with the grit chamber and vacuum filter pending. Completion and operation are expected by July 1. The upgrade includes a blower building and two 750 horsepower blowers, expanding capacity from 2 million to 4.8 million gallons daily. Federal funds of 263000 cover 30 percent of costs. Don King Construction of Jackson holds the contract for a project total exceeding 900000 including fees and contingency.
