In Saigon radicals call for a three day general strike as violence persists for the fifth day. Thich Tam Chau renounces the disorder from a secret hideout while militant monks press protests near the Buddhist Institute.
Stokely Carmichael and two SNCC workers led a 1000 strong Greenwood march demanding black power. Police jailed them for trespassing while tents were set up at Stone Street school and later Broad Street Park. White youths jeered as Gov. Johnson ordered reduced patrols after a 130 mile guard march.
Delegates at the annual Ohio Methodist Conference urged the General Conference to approve the Methodist Evangelical United Brethren union. The final legislation session planned pastor appointments and reapportionment for 1120 churches under Bishop F. Gerald Ensley in the Ohio West Area.

The Ohio Board of Regents released a 170 page plan urging universities to boost lagging research and graduate speech programs, expand access through tuition grants and building aid to church colleges, and add metropolitan centers with evening courses. It calls for a School of Public Administration at Ohio State University and a master’s program in journalism, plus nursing programs and library coordinating centers. Costs were not specified in the final plan.
President Johnson tells White House legislators the United States is ready for peace discussions on Viet Nam anytime anywhere with any government. He insists the other side must also want talks and tests test when a place and date are named. The remarks followed Mansfield's New York proposal to have Rusk meet Chen Yi to explore peace.
Major changes in labeling and contents for most diet foods and supplements were announced by Dr. James L. Goddard. A Recommended Dietary Allowance will replace minimum daily requirements, with six month to take effect. Restrictions include low calorie labeling to 15 calories per serving and reduced in calorie claims to at least 50 percent fewer calories. Eight fortified food classes including breakfast cereals and iodized salt are defined. Extravagant promotion of multivitamin and mineral supplements meeting no need will be prohibited.
Bishop F Gerald Ensley announced changes in ministerial assignments and three district superintendents in the Ohio Conference. John E Longsworth named superintendent of the Chillicothe District succeeding Stanley Jeffery with Jeffery moving to Milford. New Chillicothe district assignments include John H Williams to Millersport Jack D Lebstrom to Haydenville-Webb s Chapel John W Glick to Laurelville Roger A Ashley to Me Arthur Zaleski from Cedarville Lewis F Skiver to Sedalia Newport and Frank A White to New Holland-Atlanta.
Berman Schultz, 52, attempted to back his car into a Logan home garage on Fourth Street and struck the Kenneth Stewart residence across the street. Police estimated damages around 350 dollars to the Stewart house and well. Schultz was cited for reckless operation.
Fred P. Neuenschwander of the Ohio Department of Development urged SEORC members that development must come from local initiative, not federal or state action alone. He cited Logan Goodyear and Wellston Purina as examples of industry attracted through community cooperation and argued in favor of focusing on access to opportunity.
