Delta Queen to retire from river service in 1970

The Delta Queen steamboat faces retirement after the Safety at Sea Law of 1968 requires all overnight passenger craft to be all steel. Washington granted a temporary reprieve, but the Queen’s wood superstructure and costs to replace her are prohibitive. A replacement would cost over 10 million dollars, delaying plans for a new steel vessel. The Queen will run short excursions this year, with longer cruises planned next season if possible.
