Senators backing Nixon's Vietnam pullout question whether South Vietnamese forces can assume major combat responsibility. McGovern cites cost and efficacy concerns. Stennis voices skepticism about rapid progress. Pentagon plans to shift some sensor outposts to Saigon this summer as part of troop swap.
North Vietnamese sappers attacked a U S brigade base near the A Shau Valley, killing 18 American paratroopers and wounding 47 as 40 to 50 attackers climbed a jungle slope. Three U S brigades clashed in various sectors with 63 enemy reported killed and U S losses mounting. Rockets and mortars struck bases though civilian casualties were reported in a separate strike southeast of Saigon. The sharp fighting overlapped with announced phased U S troop withdrawals slated to begin within days and run through August.
Washington officials say a compromise on the antiballistic missile system is possible though President Nixon has not changed his stance. He seeks a Senate showdown on initial deployment of two operational sites, with weeks remaining before a vote while a dozen lawmakers waver.
Evangelist Billy Graham drew a massive, mixed crowd in Madison Square Garden for the second night of his 10 day New York crusade. About 23 000 attended, with another 3 000 watching via closed circuit TV at Manhattan Center. Attendees ranged from skeptics to devout believers, many coming to hear song prayer and exhortation.
Cleveland Mayor Carl B. Stokes canceled a national TV appearance on Meet the Press amid racial tensions and warnings of a troublesome weekend. He said he would stay in the city to oversee any disturbances. In Columbus, Inez prepares 1,275 delegates for Buckeye Girls State. In Athens, Ohio, the Boys State program continues. Also in Ohio, Hob Hope receives a second honorary degree in eight days at Bowling Green, with other honorees including Cyrus Vance. In Columbia, Ohio, House committees plan hearings on education and taxes, debating a new county-based income tax to fund schools and ease property taxes.
Washington AP reports about 8 001 Army troops including 2 000 reservists mobilized last year will be returned to the continental United States and their units inactivated or demobilized as part of a 25 000 man withdrawal from Vietnam by year end The pullback will include some Navy personnel with initial figures under 2 000 Marines and Army units 16 000 soldiers in two brigades of the 1st Infantry Division and a Maine regiment to be redeployed or demobilized The 9th Infantry Division brigade about 4 000 troops will be flown home for deactivation another 4 000 in nondivisional Army units including 20 Army Reserve elements totaling about 2 000 will be demobilized About 10 000 National Guard and reservists remain overseas Officials indicated most National Guard units will not be brought back in the initial withdrawal Seven Air National Guard squadrons active at the start of Vietnam are already home or en route for demobilization The Regular Army forces in the 1st Infantry Division brigade and the regimental landing team of the 3 Marine Division are identified for withdrawal The Marine unit and other 1 9 Infantry Brigade will depart Vietnam by air and sea in July and August with destinations to be announced later

Washington AP draft director Lewis B Hershey said Saturday he will not heed a federal court decision that the legality of draft protest guidance remains unsettled. The Court of Appeals refused to block application of the Hershey doctrine, urging local boards to follow the law as declared. Hershey criticized the ruling as illegal and potentially unconstitutional and said he would not notify boards of the appellate decision.
