John L Lewis Dies Leader of United Mine Workers

John L Lewis died at Doctors Hospital at age 89 after internal bleeding. The longtime head of the United Mine Workers Union and a driving force behind the CIO’s formation, he organized miners and led major strikes, shaping American labor policy for decades. He is survived by son Dr. John L Lewis Jr. and a daughter Kathryn who died in 1962. Funeral plans were not announced.

Six Fairfield School for Boys teens still missing
