Hoover signs the bill after Senate approval as new excise taxes join a broad set of levies. A three cent postage rate starts within two weeks and income taxes apply to 1932 incomes next year. The economy bill aims to cut federal expenses by about 238 million dollars to balance the budget.
Public Defender Frank J. Egan turned himself in at Park Police Station in San Francisco on murder charges connected to the death of Mrs. Jessie Scott Hughes. He was escorted to Police Captain Michael Riordan’s office for questioning after being identified with Verne L. Doran and Albert J. Nin as the indicted suspects.
The office of auditor J. C. Edmundson reports the collection under the new tax law. Tangible taxes collected total $23,172.57 and intangible $22,313.66. Delinquent tangible taxes received amount to $8,855.25.
Chicago reports tickets for one full day at the Republican National Convention went on sale at 3.40 to 8.00 dollars. This marks the first time nonseason tickets are sold for a national convention. Democratic convention tickets at the same prices go on sale a week before their opening. Each ticket covers two daily sessions with prices listed as second balcony 3.40 first balcony 4.40 and mezzanine 8.00.
Pittsburgh July 7 report notes Congress has not reduced use of relatives on the federal payroll despite calls for economy. Raymond Clapper cites failure to curb franking mail while House votes a 25 percent increase for folding and sealing of franked mail in a campaign year.
In Nelsonville on June 7 a parade of several hundred miners marched through city streets led by ex service members and a United Mine Workers banner. The event included more than 100 women in front ranks and a 760-strong turnout passing a point in 15 minutes.
Washington dispatch reports Roosevelt supporters prepared to challenge for the permanent chairman at the Democratic national convention. Jouett Shouse leads the opposing side arguing bad faith, while Senator Thomas J. Walsh has been chosen by Roosevelt forces. Shouse is linked with the Stop Roosevelt faction and aligns with Alfred E. Smith and John J. Raskob.
Leaders of the Ohio Prohibition Party met in Columbus to select a state ticket for November. Indicated candidate for governor is Dr Aaron S Watkins of Lima.
Parents of students living in Athens Township outside Athens City meet at 7 30 tonight at Mechanicsburg School on Richland Avenue to discuss whether children will attend the city school or other township schools.
John D Rockefeller Jr long known as a teetotaler now urges repeal of the Eighteenth Amendment. He argues drinking has risen and speakeasies have replaced saloons, saying respect for all law has diminished.

Registrar F B Dilley reports anticipated summer session enrollment at Ohio University may equal last summer. Registration is set for Monday June 13 in the Women's Gymnasium from 8 to 11 30 a m and 1 to 4 30 p m. Last year’s enrollment was 1355 with 1450 the prior summer.
In Columbus a 45 year old Mrs. Viola Walker shot herself and her husband Joseph 50 was wounded in the left leg. Police believe Mrs Walker fired the fatal shot ending their 16 month marriage. Both were from Covington Kentucky and had quarrelled prior to the incident.
Mayors of eight major U. S. cities led by Detroit's Frank Murphy urge the House to wage a federal war on hunger and unemployment. The committee, representing about 25 large municipalities, conferred with Speaker Garner, Majority Leader Rainey and Republican Leader Snell.
Santiago Chile June 7 U P reports Carlos Davila head of Chile's three day old Socialist government may resign due to army and navy dissatisfaction civil demonstrations and quarrels among leaders. An important army section opposed the regime. Generals Tellez Vergara Montero Saez and Otero applied for retirement as the government ordered changes in naval command.
Lorain solicitor Wesley L. Grill says 16 Ohio municipalities will meet in Columbus on June 22 and 23 to scrutinize Ohio Fuel and Gas Company books held by state commissions in an effort to push for revaluation of the company’s property and lower gas rates.
Hundreds of disabled World War veterans will visit the White House June 15 for a garden party hosted by President and Mrs Hoover. The former soldiers will be transported from area hospitals to the White House gardens, with Cabinet members and Corners wives invited to assist in greeting them.
A massive explosion and ensuing blaze shattered a six story building in downtown Cleveland early today. At least ten dead and about 30 seriously injured among 200 residents. Firefighters staged dramatic rescues as investigators search for a cause, possibly a gas explosion at Markowitz Restaurant.

No meetings in July or August. The September session will be in Nelsonville.
Members of the Kiwanis Club visited the Athens Ice & Storage Company on Monday night. A. E. Whaley and Frank Kayser led a tour showing ice manufacture, cutting, storage, and the plant’s water wells electric plant and oil well.
Dr. Wan Yi Chao, an Ohio University graduate, travels from Athens to Peiping to join the Manchurian governor's forces. He served as an intelligence corps officer and wrote of his voyage from March to May, including a stop in Honolulu. He notes surviving Japanese danger and praises his U.S. trip and Honolulu’s beauty.
Washington June 7 The American Railway Association reports the week ending May 28 saw revenue freight carloadings rise to 520 042 cars, 512 more than the prior week, though still below the 192? figures. The result marks the first weekly increase after a prolonged decline.
On the Yangtze 40 miles below Chungjiang a Chinese force attacked the stranded British steamer Wanliu which carried 110000 in specie. The U S Gunboat Oahu opened fire with heavy machine guns to protect the Wanliu as the British Kiawo transferred passengers cargo and specie during the night and into the next morning.

A chain of events began when three year old Emma Bluemaker fell from her crib in Haddonfield. The ambulance carrying her and her father collided with a sedan near Camden, killing patrolmen John Knorr and Frank Tucker, driver Richard Roedecker, two women, and Emma Bluemaker died later in hospital.
