City Council Passes Scale Ordinance in Final Reading
The city council held a regular session with Mayor Logan presiding. They passed the scale ordinance on its third and final reading by unanimous vote and deferred the vehicle tax to a special committee for final fixing. The cemetery report found the grounds dilapidated except the garden of janitor T. J. Morris, who would oversee cleaning duties in line with pay. The council accepted Seasons & Mayer bid for fifteen thousand municipal light bonds and adjourned to meet next Monday night.

Drunkenness and Disorderly Conduct In City Police Court
James Rose of Luhrig and George Kelly of Albany were arrested Sunday on drunkenness and disorderly conduct charges. Before Mayor Logan they were fined six dollars plus costs totaling 9.90, paid before returning home. The mayor noted Sunday desecration led to the higher fine. Rose said staying out of town might be the only way to stay strictly good.

Sudden Death of John N. McVay Veteran in Jacksonville
John N. McVay, a well known Grand Army veteran from Jacksonville, died after falling head first into shallow spring water on Tuesday the 26th while drawing water. He was taken to Hibbardeville P. church for services conducted by Rev. Kirkpatrick of Albany. He served from July 1861 to October 1864 in Co 36th O V L A, was a photographer and teacher, and leaves many loyal friends at past age seventy seven.

Horton Young Dies After Operation in Columbus
Horton Young of Lodi township died at St. Francis hospital Columbus Tuesday noon after an operation to remove a bullet lodged in his leg from an injury five years earlier. He was about 35 and his remains were moved to the Pratts Fork home for funeral services and burial. The bullet broke into four pieces and blood poisoning followed the inflamed wound. Young had been shot by James Cuckler who served one year in the penitentiary.

Automobiles Increase in Athens with New Purchases

Death of James E. Clark in Troy Township
James E. Clark, a longtime Troy Township resident and Free Will Baptist church member, died at his home after a complication of diseases. Born May 25, 1825 in Harrison County, he married Mary Moore of Athens County in April 1826 and five of their seven children survive. Funeral services were held Thursday with interment in the local cemetery.
