Kilbourne Chosen Governor Ticket in Democratic Nominating

The Ohio Democratic convention in Columbus nominated James Kilbourne for governor by acclamation, with John L. Zimmerman as his lone rival. Ohio University presidency decline leaves board to reconvene

Major L. M. Jewett announces Rev. Hutsinpiller of San Francisco has declined the Ohio University presidency elected at the June meeting. The board will reconvene July 15 to select a new president, leaving the university without a leader.

Fourth of July Festivities Spark Athens Celebration

The first independence day of the twentieth century unleashed loud crackers and rockets. In Athens a large crowd gathered on the college campus for a grand pyrotechnic display with music from the Athens band. Organizers J D Gist C L Biddison and I M Foster raised about 70 dollars for the show.

COOLVILLE CAMP MEETING SET WITH RENOWNED SPEAKERS

The Marietta district camp meeting returns to the Coolville grounds from August the event will feature evangelist Rev Henry Ostrom and gospel singer Rev John P Hillis joining Epworth League leader Rev J P Steele and Sunday school secretary Mrs A G Crouse. Prudent repairs and grounds upgrades are planned, with horses cared for on site and expectation of a record turnout led by S S Humphrey as president and G K Campbell as secretary.

Residence Burned on Loch Township Farm

The large farm residence of Freeman Marshal of Loch Township near the Meigs county line was struck by lightning last Wednesday and burned to the ground. Contents mostly consumed. only a few articles saved. The house, though not new, was neat and substantial with a slate roof. Insurance with Ohio Farmer failed to cover the loss.

Historic relic shipped to Buffalo Exposition

A gold shoe eighteen inches long and seven inches wide made by Ulysses S. Grant's father was shipped from Washington to the Buffalo Exposition. For years before the Civil War it hung as a sign in front of Grant and Perkles tannery at Galena Illinois, and its display will draw thousands of visitors.

Tragic Beaumont Train Death Of Two Year Old Child

Two year old Pearcy Cathorns of Beaumont was struck by a freight train Wednesday afternoon and died a few hours later. Engineer Horace Mender saw the child, reversed, but could not stop the engine. The boy played between the rails near his home. his mother found the mangled body as the train neared the house and cared for him until burial Thursday.

State Hospital Buildings Progress At Athens Campus

The amusement hall at the Athens state hospital will not be ready for constant use until about the first of the year. It was temporarily set up for Fourth of July events but will not be used again until finishing touches are added. Completion costs run about $30,000. A new hospital cottage nears completion and should be ready for occupancy next month at a cost near $10,000.

County Officials Settle Athens Quarter Affairs

Infirmary Director McLaughlin of Coolville traveled to Athens on Saturday en route to Logan. He joined Directors James of Glouster and Woodworth of Millfield at Beaumont. They met Hocking county directors and settled Athens county affairs for the just ended quarter.

Heat Sparks Unlikely Hatch in Vanderhoof Patch

Ed Campbell of Vanderhoof, Carthage assessor, recalls finding eight eggs on a berry patch with no hen nearby. He placed them in a barrel in the chicken house and, by Tuesday morning, all eight eggs hatched without any hen, the chicks thriving.

Athens Couple Public Bank Scene After July Revels

Alexander Hunkerford of Athens was arrested for prolonging the Fourth of July celebration and jailed for meditation over the fall of man after failing to pay a fine. Elmer Sherrard and wife of Gloucester caused a disturbance in Athens over money deposited in a local bank, boarding a train and racing to claim funds, but the pair ended up in a cab confrontation and arrests for disorderly conduct with fines totaling 4.90.
