Richards Arrested Again After Bail Denied

John Richards, previously jailed for stealing $50 from Warren Bros. safe, was re-arrested Wednesday and sent to jail after a failed bail bond. He faced a Friday hearing and was bound over to court in a $2000 surety. Emory Watkins and Emory Markins were fined 5 plus costs for intoxication, as was William Perry. Joseph Walker of Lubric was held on charges including threatening his wife and assault on his father-in-law, bound over to court in $200.

Annual Institute for Athens County Teachers Opens Aug 5

The Athens county teachers institute meets in the old Ohio University chapel for two weeks starting August 5. Instructors include Dr. Byron W. King of King’s School of Oratory Pittsburg Prof. Wm Crane Dayton high school and Prof J W Denney Ohio State University. Dr J P Gordy will not attend and Denney fills his place. Five evening lectures are planned two in week one and three in week two with Crane’s Poe and the Raven as a topic. All county teachers are urged to attend at least one week.

Pump House Damaged by Fire in Early Monday Forenoon

The B. & O. S. pump house caught fire Monday forenoon, damaging the interior by about twenty five dollars. The fire started somehow from the pump house boiler. An attempt was made to reach the Arc department, but the blaze was extinguished and the damage repaired before communications could be opened with the department.

Post Dentist Earl S. Pilcher of Manila United States hospital corps reports promotion and appointment as post dentist with headquarters at Manila. He trained in dentistry and served in the Philippines, with a newly created position offering a good salary. The Coolville campmeeting runs August 1 to 11 with evangelists singers and daily children's meetings promising rest and spiritual refreshment.

Formal Application Made for Free Delivery in Athens

Postmaster Gist has applied to the U S Post Office for free city delivery in Athens. The annual business surpasses 810,000, and arrangements are under way in Washington. If approved, delivery could begin early next year with two to three new carriers after civil service exams. The town would gain six rural routes and all night service, praised for rapid distribution and clock-like operation. General Grosvenor personally reviewed the matter in Washington.

Attorney Ames Dies Suddenly in Grocatss

James B. Ames prominent attorney dies suddenly in Grocatss at about age, after recent operation. Survived by two wives and a one week old child. Funeral services arranged in Grocatss, with remains to be moved to Chauncey tomorrow afternoon for burial.

Beebe Completes Globe Tour After Philippine Service

Corporal Peter Beebe of Beebe returns home from a year and a half with the 41st United States Volunteers in the Philippines. He toured the globe aboard the Logan and later boarded the Boford for home, visiting Gibraltar Sicily Egypt Suez Canal Red Sea Malacca and Manila Bay en route. He saw natives, noted their intelligence and musicians, and recalled Aguinaldo’s capture affecting resistance. He arrived in Athens Wednesday evening after the long voyage.

Fatal mill accident at Amesville injures D M Gift

A Saturday morning accident at the flouring mill of Berslays & Bro in Amesville badly injures C. D. Gift the day engineer. His trousers caught on a set screw as he was near a rapidly revolving shaft causing him to be torn and bruised. He was taken to the mill office, dressed, and sent home then boarded a train to Columbus with his wife and two attendants. Gift, about 25, recently married, is from Hebbardaville and his parents live there. News of his condition was not yet received.

Nelsonville Fireman Killed in Ohio Crash

A wreck on the Hocking Valley railway near Vinton Gallia county Tuesday morning killed fireman T. L. Socie a Nelsonville resident. Engineer and brakeman escaped with minor injuries. Socie’s body was taken to Nelsonville for burial. The WRBC women will serve ice cream and cake Tuesday evening at Jonesin on the College Campus price 10c.

Judge D A Russell of Pomeroy Dies by Self Destruction

Athens county mourns as Judge D A Russell, former circuit judge and cousin to Meigs county legal circles, dies by self inflicted gunshot in Cincinnati. He left a sealed letter to his wife and struggled with recent mining investments and heavy reverses. Funeral services were held in Pomeroy after his body was moved from the morgue.

First man to market wheat this year

F. L. Junod earns the distinction as the first man to market his wheat this year with a harvested thrash delivered to John C. Campbell on Saturday. He hurried the wheat to manage a very large peach yield alongside the crop.
