Substantial rainfall and electrical storms dominate records this spring and summer with record heat chasing the hundred mark. Farmers report late corn planting, flooded lowlands, and hay loss while lightning injuries and farm incidents are noted across several localities.
Ex commissioner C I Ham a longtime Athens county citizen died in Memphis Tennessee at his son's home. Born July 1831 in Kennebec County Maine he moved to Athens after school and worked on the M A railroad then the N E S W project in Springfield Illinois. He later ran the Wm Henry farm at Canaanville before serving as county commissioner from 1884 to 1891 and earning a reputation for bridge and road construction. He married Lucy Plicher in 1853 and Jane Benny in 1858, leaving two children Chas W of Memphis and Mrs Della Rambo of Zanesville.
The Athens board of trade has urged B and O S W to add a morning local passenger train between Parkersburg and Athens amid years of sparse service. Merchants say east end shipments now go via Columbus, prompting potential boycotts if no train is added. A local push awaits a firm commitment as evidence suggests the railroad may plan two trains soon.

The Democratic senatorial convention for the joint Othlith district met in Lancaster Friday. O A Lambert of Marietta was nominated for state senator by acclamation after Judge Kennedy withdrew in Lambert's favor. Lambert, born at Chester Hill in Morgan county about 42 years ago, has practiced medicine in Marietta for eight years.
