A large turnout estimated at about two thousand attended the event. The day featured excellent order and a spirit of peace and friendship. The success was attributed to the leadership of Posie Of EE i 3, EL ficitiait, Ja and John McLaughtin.
In New England Rev Swain a Free Methodist preacher and his wife unexpectedly attended Len Poston's Saturday dance. He read a bible chapter at twelve and dismissed the event. Dancers were crestfallen but returned home quietly. The incident sparked discussion and a plan for another dance Wednesday night. The youth vow to continue despite the preacher's admonitions.
The Athens color team traveled to Rendville on the Fourth for a close game in front of a large crowd. Daniels starred in the field, Lockhart and Ware’s pitching fanned 13 as Athens won 7 to 3. Readville’s heavy hitters were stifled by Ware’s pace and the Athens defense.
Mohawk Tribe members held memorial rites Sunday with a procession from the lodge room to the depot then to the Christian church for an address by Rev. T. L. Lowe. A second procession to the new cemetery featured ritual services and grave decoration for G. W. Bareh at Canganville by the Athens lodge committee.
Belmont Oil and Gas Co has sold its gas wells north of town formerly supplying the state hospital with gas. Workers are removing the pipeline from Athens to the hospital across the river while the Randol and Slaughter fields continue to yield substantial gas.
Mr George M Shamel and Miss Olah Brown wed at her Pleasanton home Thursday evening with Rev W S Bash presiding. The couple will reside in Pleasanton and begin married life together after the ceremony.
George Kidwell aged 51 and Patrick Russell aged 33 were killed by a fall in a 44 foot coal room at Kimberly on Thursday about 11 oclock. Kidwell died instantly with multiple injuries. Russell suffered a broken leg and severe trauma. Funeral services were held Saturday near Kimberly with kin from Trimble and Columbus in attendance. An official investigation will examine conditions and determine blame if warranted.
A July seventh picnic in Plantsville featured torpedoes and firecrackers, a dinner basket meal, and patriotic speeches by Ro of Morgan County and E C Woodworth of Athens. Afternoon events included bicycle and three legged races, a 100 yard dash, a ball throwing by ladies, clay pigeon shooting, and an ice cream social with fireworks and patriotic demonstrations.

The annual Coolville Camp Meeting begins Thursday night July 24 with a sermon by Rev Henry Lortram. The noted evangelist has been engaged for the third straight year to conduct evangelistic services throughout the gathering. Mr.
Hillis will again lead singing with Genl Grosvenor speaking to oil soldiers. Prof Walker of Delaware will head the Young People’s meetings, and Mrs Crouse leads Children’s meetings. Board and lodging available at reasonable rates. For rental information contact WLOR.
A torrid but well attended Fourth of July in Amesville showcased foot races won by Heber H. Heary and Ray Cope land, hurdle and throw contests won by multiple locals, a high scoring ball game 11 to 10, and an Amesville corner hand concert at dusk with a grand display of fireworks. The band collected about 53 for their effort.
Ralph P Jennings and Pearl Goodman of Decatur Alabama will marry in Decatur Monday evening at the Goodman home. Jennings operates the Simplex Typesetting Machine and has been visiting his uncle in Decatur for a month. The couple will honeymoon and reside at the Jennings home on Union Street after the wedding.
Four successful applicants previously chosen for clerkship and substitute carriers earned eligibility. W C Jones passed carrier tests then raised his grade in the final examination. Six eligibles remain for appointment upon vacancy with average grades listed: W C Jones 3.79, Pearl D Yitl 73.20, Harvey K R Ramsey 75.5, Cyrus D Higgins 72.23, Carlos H Stickney 72.51, Allen D Anthony 75.
Mr. C. AM Matheny was elected principal of Athens High School at the board meeting Monday night. About fifteen applicants sought the job, with Miss Garet Smythe favored for grades. Matheny, Ohio University 1900 graduate, led Covville schools last year and is described as diligent and progressive. Miss Smillie, Lebanon graduate, completed special work at the University of Cincinnati and arrives with strong recommendations from Eneasville.
The report notes fervent Independence Day celebrations in the Philippines as civil government begins and friars depart. It discusses Taft’s stance on church-state separation, friar lands opening for settlement, and prospects for Cuban reciprocity urged by Roosevelt. Roosevelt leaves Washington for Pittsburgh delivering two speeches as preparations for a rest at Oyster Bay proceed with a summer schedule.
Athens observed a subdued Independence Day with little celebration. Heat and weariness kept crowds small, business paused at noon. A small fund funded a modest pyrotechnic display on hilltops near the hospital and about four to five hundred watched. The Maccabees served cream and cake on campus, the State Hospital dance drew many outsiders, and the event ended without incidents or casualties.
C A Kleeberger begins a Sunday School dusticate program in the Christian church tonight using a stereopticon to illustrate his work. Sunday morning at 10 o clock a combined service of the Sunday School and church will be held in charge of Mr Kleeberger. The public and all Sunday School workers are invited.
Invitations announce the wedding of Meachum R. Blumenburg formerly secretary to Gen Grosvenor and Miss Minnie May Torbert. The ceremony will be at the First Congregational Church in Washington DC at 7 20 in the evening on July 1 with a reception to follow at the New Willard Hotel. Mrs Blumenberg will honeymoon in Europe.
Henry Whitmore of Sunnraide reports the death of his wife Mrs Whitmore on Thursday morning after a battle with diseases. She was sixty two years old. Funeral services were held at the home Saturday afternoon with Revs Cherrington and Lowe officiating. Interment followed in the new cemetery.
The church will host a ten cent cream social at the home of Addison Osler on Saturday evening to raise funds for church needs. Proceeds go to the congregation.
