City officials hammered out the 1907 municipal tax levy during a long meeting with most members present. Debates over Mill Street water and sewer fixes, Race Street drainage, and potential bonds dominated, as estimates suggested 16.5 mills total with adjustments from liquor tax changes.
Mr. W. H. Criswell of Millfield Athens county and his daughter Mrs. Ida Mynheer arrived in Jackson on Thursday to visit relatives including Capt. J. A. Low family. Criswell, oldest son of Alexander Criswell deceased, is noted as father of twelve and a genial figure among locals.
Eli Roush returned Monday evening from Columbus where he has been attending to business for several days. He will move to Columbus with his family the first of next week.
Athens county officials meet in Glouster to approve a steel single span bridge of 90 feet over Sunday Creek linking Madison and Main streets. The project aims for completion by fall with right of way secured and approach fill promised by local residents.
Nelsonville July 2 A week ago Sunday Mayor Sharp ordered the saloons closed on the Sabbath. John Smith, proprietor of Johnson and Smith saloon, was arrested, pleaded guilty, and fined 100 dollars plus costs totaling 109.35 dollars, the legal limit. The mayor hopes the stiff penalty will deter future Sunday openings and the town reported a quiet day.
Coolville plays Frost at the Fair Grounds with Coolville taking early control and scoring three runs by the third inning. Attendance is noted as low as the game unfolds with Coolville maintaining its lead.
The clerks and carriers at the post office receive pay raises starting Monday July 1 with merit-based increases to follow. Future raises cap after scheduled steps with clerks reaching 900 1000 in successive years. Individual post office staff like Carriers Frank Barnhill Will Clester Jones Fred Pickering Ray Ulmer plus nine rural carriers see rises to 600 800 800 800 and 900 respectively.

Miss Edna Hopkins married Merrill C. Slutz at 4 pm Saturday on Hamilton avenue Cincinnati. Ceremony led by Rev. Earl R. Slutz brother of the groom witnessed by immediate families and close friends. Slutz, a well known attorney with Boyce and Boyce, plans to reside in Cincinnati after a Dayton wedding trip.
The Board of Education met in regular session with members McDougall Palmer Worstell Sayre Copeland and Coultrap present. Coultrap submitted his resignation. a report on faulty wiring by C E Cornwell was referred to the proper committee. Wash runoff from heavy rains discussed. building and grounds committee authorized to act. Superintendent selection postponed. Miss Byrd Allum’s application noted. Adjournment set for Friday July 5 at 1 pm. Bills paid include Athens Steam Laundry 77c, Athens Gas and Light 6.90, E C Berry 12.50, H W Brooks 4000, F S Coultrap 22.50.
The State Hospital authorities plan an all day Fourth of July program for inmates with a platform dance in the amusement hall if weather allows a full orchestra, races in the afternoon, varied amusements, a day long band, and a fireworks display in the evening. The celebration is billed as the biggest in the institution’s history and highly anticipated by inmates.
The Summer School at Ohio University reaches 640 students and is on track for 700 as the term ends. Clubs form, rooms are secured, and the Summer School Mirror will publish with photos and readings. Officials praise student satisfaction as key advertising for the university.
Ethel C. Mocklee wife of Dr William J Mocklee of Chauncey was arraigned before Probate Judge Lynch on lunacy charges. An examination by Dr J L Henry found her mind unbalanced with personal crisis tendency predominating and she was committed to Athens State Hospital.
Cannons arrived months ago for the Soldiers' Monument are now mounted at the four corners of Monument Place. The larger guns and cannon balls have not yet been placed.
Supt. Bell of the Water Works reports improved supply after halting lawn sprinkling and street washing. He notes a well blown last night nearly doubled water flow and a new well will start immediately. A patrolman will enforce water use rules to ensure adequate supply for all.
Henry Barrows a prominent farmer living near Stewart died of heart trouble Friday afternoon at age 58. He leaves four grown children three sons and one daughter. Interment will be Sunday at Heichy cemetery.
Charles Watson Holland died at his home in McArthur on Friday night from heart disease. He was the brother of attorney George W. Holland of MacArthur and well known to many in the county.
