A Laurel woman linked to a bizarre murder was arrested in the Woods section. The suspect acknowledged parts of the victim but refused to identify all remains and hinted at a matricide. The case involves Mrs Daisy Kee, widow and mother, with attorney Jack Prosecutor presenting the first degree claim.
Reports from Louisiana describe tense conditions as armed groups in Feliciana parishes plan actions against authorities. National Guard troops occupy the area and local residents say plans may involve gun bearing men amid postelection unrest.
The second victim of the State Route 31 crash near Nelsonville is Mollie Maffin age 56 wife of C H Maffin who died at home Saturday night. Her mother Mrs. Robert Grimm age 75 of Willow Creek died at a local physician’s office after the wreck.
Sheriff Charles Stratton closed the German Village dance marathon on State Route 31, three miles north of Athens, after reviewing conduct and sanitation. He found the floor deserted and dancers sleeping on cots, with no money deposited as purse funds as claimed.
Washington officials expect a bill to require steamship companies to insure passenger lives for 10 000 each. Senator Wagner urged the creation of a special Senate committee to probe recent ship disasters.
Mrs. Freda Hughes aged 37 of 151 East State Street died at 8 40 this morning at Sheltering Arms Hospital from hemorrhage after an infection following childbirth in which the infant was stillborn. She was born in Guysville on June 1 1897, a former Athens resident, graduated from Athens High School, studied at Ohio University, and worked for Ray Glo and The McBee Binder Company. She married Leland Hughes in March and leaves her husband and a sister Audrey of 151 East State Street. funeral arrangements not yet set.
Mayor Len B McCune shows improvement at University Hospital Columbus after a week of serious illness. His daughter Miss Mary McCune returned to Athens yesterday and remains with him at the hospital.
Mrs Julia Cunningham 73 of Athens Route 2 suffered chest injuries and an ankle sprain in a Saturday collision on Route 31 near Floodwood. She rode in a car driven by Mrs T V Johnson of Athens Route 2 which struck a truck driven by Paul Edgar of South Shater Street Athens, state patrolmen reported.
Washington Jan 2 Senators moved to long discussions of the Roosevelt administration four eight billion work and relief bill while broad powers for the President drew strong opposition from the American Liberty League. The league condemned the measure as a step toward dictatorship and warned Congress to scrutinize the bill closely as it moves to the Senate Appropriations Committee led by Glass. Administration leaders predicted passage along their lines and the week promises other action including a World Court vote.
Flood waters receded in the Mississippi and Pacific Northwest leaving 47 known dead. New peril arose in east and southern zones as overflow reached new farms and towns. In Geneva on January 28 official Japanese said Japan and China plan a far reaching agreement to cooperate in China’s development. The aims are to curb Communism and expand economic ties to boost demand for Western and Japanese goods, with Japan retaining control of former German Pacific islands.
Roy Farmer aged 24 died Sunday morning at his mother Mrs Bertha Farmer Dowler Ridge after months of tuberculosis. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 PM at the Methodist Protestant Church New Marshfield with Rev Martin and Rev Huff. Burial in Marshfield Cemetery. Survived by mother sister Berneda Lowry Carbondale two brothers Kenneth Nile at home an uncle Fletcher Davis Chesterhill two aunts Rose Evener Phoenix Ariz Clifford Young Hamsey Run. father died 12 years ago.
Youngstown report states 90 year old Mone Oprezta was asphyxiated Sunday by fumes from a gas hot plate in his room. The incident occurred in his residence with no other persons involved.

Miss Alice Williams and Mrs. David Brucker of Mansfield Ohio perished in the Mohawk disaster after a lifeboat capsized. Williams’ body was recovered Friday miles from the sinking site and Brucker’s Saturday eighty miles off Sea Girt New Jersey. Both were found fully dressed wearing life belts.
The trial of Raymond Crosser for driving under the influence opened in Common Pleas Court in the Council Chamber at City Hall. A jury of Carl Snow, George Munn, J Altman, W H Fierbaugh, Charles Elliott, Waldo Poston, Phy lis Roberta, Harold Pierce, Abner Frost, Bert Adams, Paul Gillilan, and Bertral Carpenter was selected.
Amelia Earhart returns to Newark Airport at 1 02 p m completing a cross country trip. The daring flier had recently crossed the Pacific alone in her monoplane and arrived amid cheers at Newark N J on January 28.

Griffith H. Evans age 78 longtime Athens city auditor and prominent coal industry figure died Sunday after a yearlong illness at his home 18 Maplewood Drive. Funeral Tuesday at 2:30 pm at Ketler Presbyterian Church with burial in West Union Street Cemetery. Born in New Town Montgomeryshire Wales in 1857 he worked in mines before coming to the United States in 1888. He served as pay master and land agent for Sun Day Creek Coal Co before being elected Athens city auditor in 1922.
The Athens district plunged to six degrees below zero on Sunday night, setting a new winter record. Sunday's high was 26, today’s noon reading 15. Weather observer Mrs. C. WN France notes two prior winters with similar lows, Feb 27 1934 at 15 below and an earlier date at eight below.
Clarence Lyons, 38, of near Boling Mill, injured in a Saturday night automobile crash near Hebbardsville, was reported in fair condition at Sheltering Arms Hospital. He suffered serious facial cuts and partial nose loss from impact with the rear vision mirror and windshield. Orville Cline, 35, riding with Lyons, escaped with scratches and bruises and went home to Albany.
