Will Mullen 28 drank two ounces of carbolic acid in an Athens home after a day of heavy dissipation. He sought a beefsteak then collapsed, dying about twenty minutes later. Coroner ruled death by his own hand caused by personal crisis.
Jacksonville, Jan 27. Will Craig, about 25, was dragged a quarter mile in the Modoc mine when a runaway horse pulling an empty car threw him beneath the vehicle. He suffered multiple injuries including several broken ribs, gaping wound in the side, and extensive cuts but was recovered to a hospital and then home where doctors expect eventual recovery. He worked as a mine driver and survived the perilous incident.
Died of senility Wednesday last at her Jerseyville home. Fannie Baker, age 84, lifelong resident of Lodi township. Funeral services were held Friday in Jerseyville conducted by Rev. Evans with burial at Burson cemetery.
The seventh annual Albany farmers' institute closed after a highly attended session in the F. W. church. Rev. Wallace and W. G. Farnsworth spoke on farm relations to the commercial world and practical farming. The Wood band entertained as sessions covered home life, education, and progressive farming methods.
Athens preparations for Home-coming Week move forward as George A. Beaton plans to arrive next week to direct efforts. New York literature on Home coming will reach Athens soon and guide outreach to hundreds of absent Athenians with blanks for listing their names.
The Ohio legislature in two weeks of session saw numerous proposals from salaries for county officials to compulsory voting. Measures include theater safety requirements, maintenance of families of convicts, patent medicine disclosures, and universal suffrage plans.
Circuit court convened with Judges Cherrington Jones and Walters presiding over a single case Aaron Turner versus Modoc Coal Co for money The matter was dismissed and adjournment followed after about thirty seconds Court noted salary concerns and Judge Walters commented on duties and travel away from home.
The ceremony occurred Sunday afternoon at the parents’ home on Dean Avenue. Rev. W. L. Slutz conducted the services and the interment followed in the new cemetery.
The funeral services for Mrs Amos J Wilson were held Sunday at 2 PM at the Presbyterian church conducted by Dr G W King. Many sympathizing friends attended. The daughter Miss Mabel Wilson arrived from Whatcom Washington and stood the long trip well. Mrs Wilson died January 17 but the funeral was postponed until Sunday a week after her death. Interment was in the new cemetery.
Sam Sommer leases the second floor of the K P building and will use it for carpets and ladies ready made goods. Workmen start a stairway from Sommer's first floor to the second floor. The Athens club will move to the third floor of the Cline building in a few weeks.
Mrs Ellsworth Gillogly aged about 36 died Thursday at home near Knox in Vinton county from consumption. Funeral services were held Saturday at the Temple M E church with interment there. She leaves many relatives and friends in Albany and vicinity.
Prof John C Miller purchases the McRae property on West Union street Morgantown N Y a three and a half acre lot in a prime location. He is aided by a Christmas gift from his father Dr Miller of Goldsboro and a gift from Mrs John Fisher of Fisher O amounting to 1000 and 2000 respectively.
Mrs. Jennie Nichols of Albany lost her youngest daughter about ten days ago. Her husband Alonzo Nichols had left for Joplin Missouri to seek work, leaving the family with little money after the child's illness and death. Albany residents raised funds to cover funeral expenses, a ticket to Joplin, and a hymn sing. Alonzo Nichols sent a grateful letter to Rev. Kirkpatrick and Albany citizens thanking them for their timely assistance.
A group of prominent men including ex Mayor Bruck of Columbus and Mr L Miller of Chillicothe visited Amenville to locate the mine on the Wells farm. An agreement was reached with the M & M for a switch to the mine.
Funeral services for Mrs. Elza Goodspeed were held Friday forenoon at the Beasley residence southwest of Athens. Interment followed in the new cemetery. Dr. G Walton King led the Presbyterian church proceedings. Out of town attendees included Mrs. T A Cooper, the deceased mother, and Mrs. Carrie Epply of Chicago with her two children.
