Ohio Relief Gardens Aided 180,000 Families
The State Relief Commission reported for 1934 it financed growing and canning of 81,977,800 worth of garden produce for indigent Ohio families at a cost of 467,900. About 85,000 gardens were cultivated, 5,000,000 cans of produce prepared, 33,000 pounds of dried fruits and 100,000 pounds of dried corn. Roughly 180,000 families benefited through 155,000 homes and 3,500 canning centers under state supervision. Six hundred workers were paid in cash and 4,000 in kind or produce.
