The Athens Ohio health officer reports 1901 mortality at ten to the thousand with 36 tuberculosis deaths and a scarlet fever and diphtheria presence. He praises land drainage water supply and sewer expansion while urging water mains extension and permanent closure of old wells. An anti-spit ordinance is recommended as a sanitary precaution.
Athens health officer J. M. Higging urges the village to pass an ordinance forbidding spitting on sidewalks to curb nuisance and crowding. He notes complaints about the sewer from the asylum dumping into the river creating a foul odor for residents in the east end. He suggests extending sewerage beyond Stewart dam to prevent a great cesspool of filth near the town.
The Athens police arrested Milton Sheets also known as Harry Bell and Dick Berry on burglary charges. Sheets is wanted in Somerset county Pa for murder and was sentenced to hang. he had escaped jail two months earlier. Deputy Scott and Rosenbloom escorted them to Somerset for return.
Little Russell Goldsberry was struck in the eye by a steel object during a game Tuesday evening and sustained painful injuries. His parents rushed to Columbus where a specialist attended the eye, with doctors hopeful the eye can be saved. He will remain in Columbus a week for treatment.
Roy Walden a commission merchant attempted suicide at his Marietta home on Saturday. He placed a revolver to the median line of his forehead and pulled the trigger. the ball entered the neck below the right ear, yet he never lost consciousness and soon slept deeply. Doctors believed the wound non fatal. Walden, once a prominent student and businessman, faced mounting stress from family illness and overwork. He is about 32, married, with roots in Coolville. Friends express shock and hope for his recovery.
The tax sale began Tuesday at the county treasurer's office. Many owners quickly paid taxes and penalties, but some properties were bought by investors. The sale continues daily until all parcels are sold or forfeited to the state.
Mr. and Mrs. F. C. Rochester traveled to Logan Thursday due to the illness of Mr. Rochester's sister Mrs. Snabinus Kessler who died Thursday evening on her twenty first birthday. She left an eight week old child. Cause of death was acute rheumatism. Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at the Rochester home conducted by Rev. Harley Stewart of the Presbyterian church.
Otto Barth the miller remains under physician care in Parkersburg after illness from throat trouble. Reports yesterday suggest he will be largely restored and hopes to return home soon. Local friends celebrate his improving health. A meeting in the interest of Child Care will be held Monday at 2 PM at Mrs. Ellen P. Needham’s home. women are invited.
The Athens Farmers Institute will meet tomorrow in the college auditorium or university venue due to court sessions. Lectures cover wheat rotation labor farming education and rural topics with state speakers Messia Chamberlain and White, plus music by violin and Italian harp.
A New Year tableau recounts Pasadena’s Carnival of Roses with pageant entries from tall horse-drawn coaches to multicolored floats. Californians hail warm weather, lush fruit, and a festival atmosphere as the Michigan Wolverines beat Stanford in a notable parade.
Circuit court convened Wednesday with Judge Sibley presiding and Sheriff Murphy opening proceedings. Cases continued include Stewart vs Dale, Hixson vs Hixson, and Dorens Allison against Lohrig Coal. The partition dispute Rade haver vs Townsend from Rome township to be disposed today. Lucy Ballard appointed court stenographer.
Prof H R McVay of Washington D C secures 12000 from Andrew Carnegie for a Washington library building. Carnegie funds come with city site provision and annual support pledge of at least 1200 for upkeep. This follows a three year effort by McVay and the Carnegie committee. Also notes the death of John Bell son of Mr and Mrs Bell after a stroke, buried in Washington.
