Four people died when a keg of blasting powder exploded at the home of Sylvester Debord, a coal miner, in Morehead Kentucky. Victims included Lizzie 22 and Jesse 16, the miner’s children, Luther Hamilton 23, and his infant daughter Anna Lee. Debord escaped unharmed.
Washington January 16 Senate Judiciary Committee prepared to act on a bill to modify Prohibition. Subcommittee draft would legalize beer and wine with 3.05 percent alcohol by weight. Blaine sought a favorable report while Norris supports modification and fears court delays. Blaine aimed to bring the measure to the Senate floor this week.

Samuel Insull's passport has been cancelled and will not be renewed unless he returns from Greece to face charges tied to the collapse of his public utilities holdings. The State Department acts after failing to obtain Insull's extradition to Chicago, a routine step for fugitives, effectively barring international travel unless he seeks Greek citizenship.

Harry Weiss, a 45 year old Cleveland dry cleaner, pleaded not guilty to malicious destruction of property in connection with the Just Rite Dry Cleaning bombing at Perrysburg Ohio on January 5. His bond was set at 20000 and he was jailed pending grand jury binding. Two associates arraigned with him were also held on 20000 bonds. Weiss is also sought by Cleveland and Toledo authorities over alleged dry cleaning rackets in Northern Ohio.
In Columbus on January 16, dry advocates led by the Ohio Anti-Saloon League and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union filed three lobbyists with Secretary of State George B. Myers. Wet groups such as the Crusaders and the Women’s Organization for Prohibition Reform had not listed any representatives, with observers noting the governor’s beer regulation commission could blunt wet momentum in the General Assembly.
