A labor car crushed between engines in dense fog near Athens injures fourteen miners on the Luhrig mine line. Pruden loses his right foot above the ankle while others suffer burns cuts and bruises. All injured were returned to their Athens homes by Thursday morning. no blame attributed to the crew.

Former Athenian Carl F. Matheny Dies in Worthington
Carl F. Matheny, a former Athens county resident, died Friday night in Worthington of stomach cancer at age 59. Funeral services were held Sunday in Worthington with interment here. He leaves a wife and one son in Columbus, three brothers, two sisters, and several extended relatives. Matheny, born on the Plains, served as a minister on circuits in Athens Meigs and Washington Counties with headquarters at Amesville Stewart Harrisonville and Waterford. Veteran James Reeves Dies After Illness on the Plains
James Reeves, Civil War veteran of the 18th O. Y. I. C, Company C, died Friday at his Plains home after ten days of pneumonia. He was about 76, survived by his wife and no children. Funeral services were held Sunday at Chauncey with Rev. Cyrus Rose of Athens officiating and interment in Nye Cemetery. Reeves belonged to Columbus Golden Post No. 89, Athens, which directed the ceremony. Athens attendees included J. E. Cook, D. C. Beverage, William Jordan, and Chas Hull.

In Police Court George Thornton of Morris avenue was arrested Monday on assault and battery charges involving his father James Thornton. The father says the son knocked him down and inflicted a three inch head wound needing stitches after a quarrel over a harness hanging in the barn. The son claims he pushed his father toward the harness.
