Clifford Vorhes aged 19 an Athens Lumber Company worker died after leaping from a east bound B and O freight train in Athens. He struck the brick platform in Hebbardsville and was dragged under wheels suffering severe injuries. He died within twenty minutes at the depot. funeral services held at Cumberland Presbyterian church.

Mrs Banks was away at the time. upon returning she found the intruder rummaging through bureau drawers. The thief fled as Mrs Banks confronted him, escaping into a dark street while Officer Woodruff pursued unsuccessfully.

Zelda, Dec 29. Christmas Eve programs reflected local enterprise. An evergreen tree was placed on the church rostrum from Sherman Goodin’s premises. A musical and literary program followed with a large choir and orchestra, featuring Zelda Gibson as organist. Santa Claus distributed treats and about $100 worth of presents were given to children, with joyful scenes and cheers as the event closed.

Samuel Wells Ends Life in Nelsonville Home Tragedy
Nelsonville, Dec. 30 Samuel Wells 22 shot himself with a 32 calibre revolver in his home as his wife called to him from another room. The blow entered the right temple and lodged under the skin on the left side, killing him instantly. He had been drinking heavily and friends attribute the act to remorse. Funeral services were held at 2 o clock today at his home, under the auspices of the Uniform Bank Knights of Pythias. Interment followed at Green Lawn cemetery. He was son of A Wells of York township and had worked in railroad contracting and coal mining with Wells & Son. He left behind a wife and three children.

Talkative Stranger Suspected as Burglar In Union Street Attempt
Shortly after midnight Friday, Dr and Mrs Hoyt Larch on Union street awoke to a rattling window catch. The burglar tried to unfasten the window while the blind was down. Dr Larch investigated from stairs but saw no one on the street. He later opened a window to look for an intruder.

Death of a Pioneer in Hockingport
Curtis Knowles 88 died at his Portland home and was brought by train to Hockingport for burial beside his daughter Lucy. He served two terms as Athens County sheriff and lived in Hockingport and Portland. His wife of many years survives him. their only son lives in Montana. The couple began life in Little Hocking and later moved to Athens.

Grandfather Heroically Tries to Save Child in Rural Fire
A three year old grandson of Mr. and Mrs. James Nero died in a dwelling fire near Central Avenue. The grandfather entered the burning tarred hut to rescue the child but was overcome by heat. only charred bones remained. The shed, ten by fifteen feet, burned quickly and Nero suffered facial and hand burns.
