A sharp cold snap hit Athens last night with biting winds and a low near zero. The day saw temperatures around 9 and a high of 38 yesterday as snow melted on sidewalks. Brisk automa tions on Main Street reported by the Ath Service Department. Snow flurries forecast for tomorrow as temperatures remain frigid. The Ohio region reported subzero readings in Chardon and similar frosty conditions across surrounding areas.
Students from junior and senior classes will host a game at Athens State on pay date June 16. Details are unclear but the event involves Ohio and Athens State with a scheduled athletic activity.

One hundred and thirty employees of the William Brooks Shoe Company in Nelsonville will receive wage increases totaling about 1 percent, effective today. The company also subscribes to a group life insurance plan providing a $1,000 policy for the employee and beneficiary. The Nelsonville factory continues steady operation, producing about 1,200 pairs of shoes daily.
Three youths died instantly when a Big Four passenger train struck the sedan they rode at a grade crossing near Greenwich, north of Mansfield. Victims were Herbert Hess 21 driver of the car, Her schel McLaughlin 4, of Greenwich and Samuel Culler 22 of Plymouth. All were employees of Empire Sheet and Tin Plate Co Mansfield.
Marietta February 8 Work to raise the sunken Ohio River packet will be done by government lock and dam employees per Dam 14 announcement. The packet lies submerged six feet with engine room flooded while a diver surveys hull damage. A bulkhead will be built in the hold and the steamer pumped out as pumping equipment arrived Wednesday.
The daily treasury statement shows U S government gold resources at a new peak of 7 031 081 665 58 dollars as of today February 8. The figure marks an all time high for national gold reserves.

TRK Bennett declared his bid for the Republican nomination for Athens County treasurer in the August primaries. He currently serves as deputy sheriff and clerk in the sheriff's office, with eight and a half years of public service, plus prior roles as deputy clerk of courts and deputy county auditor. He came to Athens in 1901 from Amesville, worked as cashier at Stedman Company for eight years, and taught 11 years in county schools. His lone political run was a 1928 treasurer nomination loss by 97 votes.
Horton Border, manager of the National Re-employment Service in Athens County, tendered his resignation to the committee Tuesday night and it was accepted. His successor will be recommended within a few days to Stanley B. Matthewson, state director, for approval.
