Commissioner hopeful bounced from March ballot

Gary Grant of Nelsonville failed to qualify for the Athens County commissioner race on the March ballot after submitting 43 valid signatures, short of the 50 needed. The Athens County Board of Elections also rejected a local option for VFW Post 3477 due to insufficient signatures, while certifying six tax issues for the ballot.

Fourth District Appeals Court race draws contested Democratic primary

Portsmouth attorney Valarie Gerlach filed to enter the March Democratic primary for the 4th District Court of Appeals seat held by Matt McFarland. Her entry creates a Democratic primary contest with Pike County Judge Paul Price. Gerlach notes her clerkship for a federal judge in Cincinnati and practice at Gerlach & Gerlach with her attorney parents, focusing on Social Security disability and probate in recent years. McFarland and the primary winner advance to a nonpartisan race in November.

Athens Man Pleads Guilty to LSD Trafficking

Benjamin P. Finkel, 21, pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking in LSD and two counts each of trafficking in marijuana and possession of LSD. A joint recommendation for three years for LSD trafficking plus six months release, plus five years of community control and a 4.5 year underlying sentence, awaits sentencing in January. Evidence shows sales to a confidential informant and over 200 doses of LSD found during searches. The case resulted from a two month Athens and Washington county sheriff’s investigation.

Police charge man on gun count after watchlist check

In Newtown Ohio police charged a man with a concealed weapon violation after a 9 mm handgun was found in his vehicle during a traffic stop. Initial reports that two men were in the terrorism database were debunked and social media posts amplified the false alarm.

Athens completes major sewer plant upgrade to 21st century standards

Athens officials outlined a multi year sewer plant overhaul costing over 18 million dollars funded by local sewer funds and EPA programs. The project added UV disinfection replacing chlorine gas, new influent screening and pumping, upgraded clarifiers, a bioreactor odor control system, and a septic receiving station to reduce regional waste haul costs and environmental hazards. The city plans further water plant improvements on West State Street in coming years.

Two Chauncey women plead guilty to meth charges

Lydia D. Rodgers and Cherrysh K. Willison pleaded guilty in Athens County Common Pleas Court to illegal manufacture of drugs and related offenses from an August raid. Rodgers received a five year prison term plus five years community control with a six year underlying sentence. Willison faces a three year prison term plus five years community control and a six year underlying sentence. Danny Rodgers Jr. remains charged.

Athens City Council Orientation Saturday at Ohio University Inn

Athens City Council will hold a four hour orientation on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Wilson Room at the Ohio University Inn. Santa Claus will visit the Buchtel Village Hall on Monday at 6 p.m., and the public is invited to attend.
